No More Popcorn?????

I cant remember a time when I couldnt pick up the phone and dial popcorn or pop-1111 for the time.

imagine my shock when a co-worker told me you cant do that any more!

so, I tested it for myself: 767-1111: and you get a recording "effective September 19th, 2007, the time announcement information service has been discontinued. We apologise for any inconvenience"

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS TRAVESTY???

sara1998 09-20-2007 10:42 AM

We used to have a number that could be dialed for date, time and weather information. I can't remember the number to save my life, though. That way waaayy back when I was little.

222-2222? I always call that when I want to know the weather and I'm not near a TV or computer. It's WIBC's ~Weather Phone~.

haha! Funny, I think you're right. Oh my God, it's still in service! I'm cracking up here...

irishgrl 09-20-2007 01:05 PM

hey now! no rubbing it in!!!

I always thought popcorn (767-2676 or 767-1111) was nation wide???

can anyone else dial it??

Sarah 09-20-2007 01:07 PM

a local bank runs a service here. it's on a local number, and just gives info for my town.

it has an appropriate name: "time and temperature", but most call it "time n temp"

skcin 09-20-2007 02:45 PM

I thought the same thing as Phoenix - I'd never heard of "popcorn." I mean, we have a time & temp line, but I've never heard it called by that name.

Also, I thought this might be about the guy that got "popcorn lung" from eating too much microwave popcorn. I guess it's a specific lung disease that usually only occured in people working at microwave popcorn plants in the past because of some chemical they would inhale. Anyway, this dude recently got it & they couldn't figure out why - then he told them he's been eating at least 2 bags of the stuff EVERY DAY! He stopped & now he's fine. Anyway....carry on. :o

 I thought the exact same thing. The Popcorn Lung story was a huge deal here in Colorado (I think the man is from here). But yes, eating 2 or more large bags of microwave popcorn (extra butter) daily is generally not a good idea.

I eat a 100 calorie bag every day - and have had to deal with many a popcorn joke.

Anyway...back to the topic at hand - we had a time/temp number growing up - but it went belly-up a few years ago. We never called it popcorn.

irishgrl 09-20-2007 03:01 PM

The reason our number (is it national? has anyone tried it?) is called "popcorn" is because the numbers 767-2676 spell popcorn on the phone pad/dial. alternatively, if you're lazy you can dial 767-1111......

DrummerDeanna 09-20-2007 03:11 PM

^^

No. It is not national. I actually just spent 2.5 seconds of my life checking. I'm never getting them back and the snippy lady said "your number cannot be completed as dialed."

Dudes, it's not that he ate the popcorn twice a day. It's that he had a ritual of pulling it out of the microwave immediately, opening the bag, sticking his head in, and deeply inhaling the steam and fumes and crap. What a ree ree... he was practically begging for it. Thusly, he deserves popcorn lung. Screw it, I'm kind of grouchy today, so I'll go on and say that he deserves two popcorn lungs.
