book club

would anyone be interested in starting a book club? is that a lame idea? probably, but I don't care. I've been wanting to read something good for a while and really wanted to be able to discuss it with someone. if no one's interested, that's cool, but I thought I'd at least test the waters.

skcin 08-13-2007 04:58 PM

Oooh, I would do it! :)

Rickypt 08-13-2007 05:02 PM

Count me in. :woohoo:

danax6 08-13-2007 05:03 PM

I'm not sure if I'm able to get everything you guys want to read on this side of the Atlantic. If so, I'm in. :)

DrummerDeanna 08-13-2007 05:14 PM

I would be interested in that!

GypsySorcerer 08-13-2007 05:26 PM

Count me in, Jazzy. Graduate school completely squelched my love of reading - I need to get back into it.

trackaghost 08-13-2007 05:31 PM

Awesome idea! Like Vanessa says, if I can get it here in the UK then I'm in.

catinthedark 08-13-2007 07:50 PM

i'd be in if i could keep up! i only get to indulge in novels after i've read my three magazines - and one is the new yorker, which is weekly. but i will so try! i love book clubs.

just don't pick "the emperor's children." because?

it BITES.

ugh. 7 hours on a plane home last week. wanted to gouge out my eyes.

jannieC 08-13-2007 08:36 PM

I would, but would it be okay if I only participated in books that appealed to me? With grad school starting in a few days, I will have my hands full with **** I don't want to read.

of course.

when I say "club" I didn't mean to infer that it'd be a closed set. I was more or less looking to see if there was even an interest. anyone can jump on or drop out whenever. :)

now...for book recommendations so that we can all decide on the first book.

any suggestions?

I'm in, I love to read. I always have a book going. What kind of book is everyone interested in reading? I have an author I really enjoy, but I'm not sure what everyone is looking for. Her name is Jodi Picoult. She writes fiction on serious topics. The last one I read was about a high school shooting. Her characters are really well developed and I think her topics are good for conversation and differing viewpoints. Just a thought, let me know what you think.

sara1998 08-14-2007 12:26 PM

I would love to do it. So not a lame idea, but I dont' have time to read anything not related to algebra at the moment...

skcin 08-14-2007 12:38 PM

Definitely fiction please. At least for the first pick. I don't know how we should choose - should we check the best seller lists & see if anything sounds interesting, then have a vote? If one of us has read it already, we could either reread or just wait until others are finished with the book & start discussing....

By Gruen, Sara
An indie fave about a traveling circus comes to paperback. The 2007 Book Sense Book of the Year Fiction Winner.

2. The Kite Runner
By Hosseini, Khaled
A Book Sense Pick, now in paperback. A stunning, enlightening novel of friendship and Afghan culture and politics.

3. Suite Francaise
By Nemirovsky, Irene
Paris under the Germans, by an author exterminated at Auschwitz. A bestseller in hardcover too.

4. The Road
By Cormac McCarthy
A barren, post-apocalyptic landscape is the foreground, and background, for this Pulitzer Prize-winning Book Sense Book of the Year Honor Book and Oprah Book Club choice.

5. The Emperor's Children
By Messud, Claire
Stellar reviews accompanied this post-9/11 comedy of manners. A Book Sense (hardcover) Pick.

6. The Memory Keeper's Daughter
By Edwards, Kim

7. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

8. Middlesex
By Eugenides, Jeffrey
First a Book Sense Pick, then the Pulitzer Prize winner, now an Oprah choice.

10. The Alchemist (Updated)

my personal suggestions were going to be Beloved by Toni Morrison, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, something by Anne Rice, The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards, or Delta Wedding by Eudora Welty
