Pet Foods

So we've seen the amazing pet pictures all you Ledgies have and health stories and so much more.

I'm wondering what brand of dog/cat food do you feed your pets?

Moby has been on Castor & Pollux Ultramix Puppy Food since he came home. He loves it and his coat is great and his poop is solid and small.

When Jag was rescued from the pound we had him checked out by his vet and he has certain food allergies. He has to eat a special dry food (I'm not at home but it's Hill Prescription Diet z/d or something like that) and you can only buy it with a prescription. It costs $50 a month but Jag stays very healthy and his coat is always very smooth. I won't comment on his poop :D

In a nutshell, buy nothing that comes in bright colors, which are there to attract you, not the animal. Also, read the label. Usually, the first two things are what is mostly in the food.

I use Nutro Max and Chicken Soup for Dogs (or somthing like that).

As an aside, dry food expires in about six or so months and being in a sustained temp. of over 80 degrees can make it go bad, which you can smell.

I avoid anything by Purina, Iams, or any other major brand in a grocery store.

I feed my cat Innova Evo diet which has no grains in it. It's higher in protein and fat and lower in carbs compared to most cat feeds. It's supposed to mirror more of a diet that a cat would eat in nature which is more meat based.

Castor & Pollux Organix dry food and Pro Plan wet food.

How long has your dog been on Organix? Have you notcied the benefits? I tried Moby on it when he was a wee puppy, but it gave him the runs.

I have corresponded with the C&P owner (who is really awesome) and advised me to try it later. But the puppy Ultramix is really great too. Moby loves the banana chips in it.

I have three cats. They took to the Castor & Pollux right away with no problems. Their coats look better and they're really healthy. I started them on it about two years ago when it became available here at Whole Foods. My black cat is ten and my twin Snowshoe babies are nine.
I really like what I've read about Castor & Pollux. And I like the fact that there is no crappy filler in their foods. It's all natural just like the name implies.

Purina Dog Chow for the dog and no-name brand for the kitty. I tried to give my cat some IAMS once, but she would not eat it. She loves the store brand.

I'm glad someone else just gives their dog Purina

I feed my dog Purina One - the formula for older dogs. The vet recomended it and it's the only food in a trial of many that have not made my dog sick or horribly irregular. And she loves it.

That said my family's other dogs that we had growing up were all given just Ol' Roy - I know...it's horrible - but they liked it and they lived long and healthy lives...:p

I'm not ashamed. My vet suggested this brand, too. :) Purina Pride! :wavey:

I have learned that vets are not the end all experts to pet food nutrition. Be careful as many of them are paid by dog food companies to promote their product and they have good profit margin on the stock they sell. I took a pet nutrient class years ago and it was indeed informative on the food differences, especially between a meat based and cereal based food.

Iams for us, I believe. Although we often times get what is on sale. My 'rents are HUGE bargain shoppers.

We use Purina for our dogs, our cat will only eat Iams dry cat food.

My cats ate Nutro Max dry food, but now the one with urinary problems needs to eat prescription wet food the rest of his life. He seems to like the Eukanuba pH somethingorother.
