Stevie's Comments about the Mac and the possibility of another album

In this June's issue of Performing Songwriter, Stevie gave an interview. During this interview, she was asked to look back on the making of Say You Will ? This what she had to say:

On Feb. 2, 2002, I went staight from the Trouble in Shangri-La tour into recording with them. It was nightmare doing that record. It really was Lindsey's vision, and it wasn't very much about the other three of us. And of course it was also the first record we had ever attempted to do without Christine. Right there, the whole thing was completely insane. She is the magic mediator in that band and always was. She's the one who made light of everything and made everybody laugh and told us all that we were full of ****. She was the person who made it all work. So when she wasn't there, that sunk the boat. I don't think that my friend Chris ever realized how important she was. Without her, it's a boys' club. The lack of Christine is a big, hollow hole in my heart.

The follow up question was: "Would you be willing to attempt another record without Christine?"

Absolutely not. Not in this lifetime. Why? We already tried, and it did not work. My thing is, somebody convince Christine to come back and do this one more time. I don't think she's going to change her mind, but stranger things have happened.

What do you guys think about these comments? Is this just another "Stevie saying something she doesn't really mean" thing and she'll go back on it? Do you think she really won't do another album with Fleetwood Mac ever again without Christine? Is she saying these things to try to get Christine back?

What about her comments about Say You Will being a nightmare to make? The documentary really didn't show the "nightmare," nor did the long running tour.

Let me know what you think. Let the comments begin. :wavey:

I thought it worked great. Only thing that would have made it work even better would have been to not have Stevie on it and for it to have been released as Gift of Screws.

SYW was a more or less complete Lindsey solo album, so that's why it was his "vision". FM can't expect to take his finished songs and not take a massive role. It's not like he didn't already take a massive role

I hope that Stevie will change her mind about all this. It would be nice if she was open to recording with Fleetwood Mac again even if they never make one. From recent interviews I think Lindsey would be happy to do another album with them but doesn't hold out hope of it happening.

I say that if Stevie doesn't want to record then Mick, John and Lindsey could prove that it's still "all about the music" by recording a Mac album without her. Make a statement. Say "Okay, if you don't want to record that's fine but we are doing an album and then we're touring for it so I guess we'll see you later :wavey: " Either that or Lindsey just keeps doing solo stuff. As long as someone from FM is doing something productive and moving forward.

I saw the FWM in ny near the start of the tour and Stevie looked quite happy, but by the time I saw her in England, a long way down the line I thought Stevie looked very unhappy. She hardly ever smiled and hardly ever talked, she didn't make much contact with the audience but Lindsey was very happy.

The concerts that I have seen since of Stevie on the web, with Tom Petty, Don Henley etc - she looks really happy.

So maybe FWM just doesn't suit her anymore - I would hate to think that, but maybe that is it.

I can't imagine FWM doing concerts without Stevie - but you never know - I am sure Lindsey would be more than happy.

I agree, in spite of "the fight", it didn't seem a nightmare.
But it's the 2nd time I heard she miss Christine.

IMHO, I think Christine would make the album sound more Fleetwood Mac. I could imagine also a mac album with Lindsey and Christine without Stevie, but then I would feel something is missing, as I felt in SYW. To me, the unified whole is greater than the simple sum of their parts. That was the magic of this lineup.

But.. I think Stevie could accept a new mac album without Chris. I think she misses a lot right now, but who knows...

If Stevie doesn't want to do it, then I say don't. I wont miss her in the Mac to be quite honest. I'd take her solo any day of the week...

Yeah, Stevie, like Chris going through a divorce (a few years ago) and perhpas needing $$ again. Thats really what its going to take to get her back. They ALL come back when the dough is right!!!

Is this Stevie being rea;istic or dramatic. Hindsight is always 20/20, BUt at the time, it seemed like a great tour, even minus Christine. Sure, it didn't sell that well and was indeed Lindsey's vision, BUt Stevie had the ability to put on the brakes too and say, "This is not what I want Lindsey.".

Like I posted elsewhere...if Stevie balks at Fleetwood Mac, send her packing. And, either add Mick & John to Lindsey's current touring band and call that Fleetwood Mac, or replace George Hawkins with John McVie in the latest edition of the Mick Fleetwood Band and call that Fleetwood Mac. I'd really prefer an all-male Fleetwood Mac once again, anyway.

From what was shown on Destiny Rules Lindsey was a constant drama queen ( even all the editing could'nt hide it ) so I don't blame Stevie for not wanting to deal with that kind of situation. They need Christine to come back and a new producer. Fleetwood Mac is more than a retread Lindsey solo album.

I couldnt agree with you more...

This is exactly how I feel also. At least in the documentary he seems to take small issues and dwell on them forever until they become big issues. I also think that he should not produce any new work that FM does as he does not put the same level of effort into Stevie's songs anymore as he does his own. On SYW, Stevie's songs Thrown Down and SYW...along with probably Destiny Rules and EFO could have been hits with the proper production. I think his work on her songs on SYW is sub-par.

And, just my 2 cents..if FM makes another record without Stevie or Christine, I wont be buying it.

she's not balking at FMac. it's ok for people to rag on her for being airy fairy and airheaded, but when she says that FMac can be a little overwhelming and not the same without Christine she's being disloyal. if Stevie's been anything to FMac it's loyal. she can voice her problems with the band. that doesn't mean she doesn't appreciate and love them all the same.

I've had it with BOTH Lindsey & Stevie holding up Fleetwood Mac projects for their own whims. From 1981 to the present, Fleetwood Mac could have EASILY released twice to three times as many albums if they'd just been "a band" rather than seemingly some sort of "military academy" for the California duo. Sure, Fleetwood Mac became some sort of megasuperstar band after Lindsey & Stevie joined, but, I still say that the Rumours phenomenon was a sadistic curse on the band.

that's fine and good, but at this point, without Stevie and/or Lindsey all you have are a fabulous drummer and bassist.

I'll give you your all-male FMac band without Stevie and/or Lindsey if you'll give me a new Stevie solo record.

deal?

Sure!!! That scenario just means MORE songs all around. As I've posted numerous times and I'm obviously not shy at repeating myself (as most people already know), Stevie & Lindsey should've just packed their bags and split Fleetwood Mac the day after the Tusk tour ended.

Without Stevie and/or Lindsey, that means that Fleetwood Mac can be a full-time working entity instead of this every 4 years they become a nostalgia act that is always "reuniting".

Liza 06-26-2007 01:36 PM

Well, as far as I am concerned I would love to see Stevie and Lindsey, with or without the rest of the Mac. Given the chance I would be over the moon to see Stevie or Lindsey for that matter come to the UK without the Mac - that would be fantastic - rather selfish maybe.
