MySpace - Should it be just for 18yrs. & Older?

Yes , I think that it would help eliminate children or teens from being subjected to adult content and pedifiles.

I have to say...

I agree since I have a 14 year niece who, in the recent past, has had men in their late 30's try to send her friend requests - that **** is so wrong...Doesnt fly to me and her parents either.

At least now my niece had ME listed as her #1 friend (No choice on her end - moreso her Dad's idea, so I can watch out for her) and I am letting those 'outsiders' know that if they even think for one second they can take advantage of her THEY WILL BE VERY SORRY!!!

eh, lots of kids would lie about their age to get onto it anyway. i mean, sure, it's a good idea to make it 18 and over, but as to whether it would work, we can't really be sure.

it would make it less glittery.. that's for sure.

No, kids just need to be educated on how to conduct themselves and parents need to pay attention.

The other day I was at the pool at my apartment complex and overheard an eleven-year old girl telling a sixteen-year old boy that he should friend her on MySpace because she had "really sexy pictures" in her profile that she thought he'd like.

estranged4life 06-16-2007 08:37 AM

True...

my afore-mentioned niece, during the Memorial Day weekend (With help courtesy of the hotel's PC) setup a myspace acct. where she stated she was 18 years old (She's 14) and had several adult males sending her 'friend requests'...One of these guys was nearly the same age as her father.

I had it brought to my attention (The lying of the age...Thank you 'nickay'!!!) and I passed the info to my brother, who deleted her acct without care because he did not know she had pulled such a stunt after being warned before (Though in the past she did the exact same thing).

My niece used the excuse "I see no harm since my friends do the exact thing, no one knows who we are or what we are really like", that didnt matter to her father or myself. I was being protective of my niece so I 'ratted' her out.

As I stated above, she does have another myspace acct., but this time she has been truthful about all her info. Her father allowed her to keep this acct., on the condition that I am the first friend add she has and I will be watching for any signs of trouble while she is online (Yes, I know her email info & password for her myspace acct., and I will snoop in her acct. if I feel there is something going on that shouldnt be going on I will disable her act., that was the deal for this last chance at trust via myspace for my niece.)

Well, you can set those profiles to private, and then no one would be able to contact them. Then it's just up to the kids on whether or not to reply. That's where user responsibility comes in and kids making the right choices.

Myspace blows ass

Facebook rawks.

Plus on facebook someone can only see your profile if they allow you to be their friend.

I think they should be at least 16 years old since most 16 year old kids are more mature. Parents should be aware of what their kids are looking at on the computer and no kid needs their own computer in their bedrooms. Parents should have the right and freedom to hover over their children's shoulders once in awhile and see what their kids are looking at on computers to protect them.

myspace ...IS for kids, yes i know i have a myspace, but i think it should be up to the parents to see what their kid is doing online, & i am a mom of an 8 yr old~

Chrislit18 06-17-2007 08:33 PM

i dont think it should
Im under 18, and i have a myspace
my profile is private
the only people not from my school that i talk to ARE around my age [pictures, and just the way they talk give it away]
and i only talk to people over 18 in groups [like days of our lives...all women basically lol, and FM group...and i think we all know how harmless we are ]
as long as kids know how to use it, there is nothing wrong with kids under 18 having one
i know 12 year olds who have one, and thier supposed to be 14 [ok, so i was 13 when i signed up, and i say im 18...big deal]

neither of my parents care
hell my mom doesnt even care that i use this site
it is because i am a responsible teenager...i know right from wrong

maybe the parents should have to sign a consent if the kid is under 18 or something, i really dont think its right though that so many kids have one [most of them i know have it without thier parents knowledge...]

It's automatically private when you're under 18.

Also, parents can install software on computers to track what their kids are doing online.

same as on myspace? if you make your profile private, the only information that non-friends can see is your name and your default pic.

i teach sixth grade (most are eleven and twelve) and half of them have a myspace. the other half parrot "myspace is dangerous" like their parents probably do. i think that there are very easy ways to keep yourself safe and your personal information private. a lot of people simply don't care.

Karlie 06-19-2007 03:14 PM

I think it should be for 18 and older, just because that would cure my addiction to it... at least for the next six months until I turn 18.

Kids these days - myself included - spend too much time on the internet. Myspace prevents kids from going outside and living real childhoods.
