Rufus Wainwright - Release The Stars
I know there are some Rufus fans here...who bought his new CD? What do you think?
![]() At first listen, I wasn't too impressed. Want One to this day still can bring me to tears, so I guess I'm always expecting something at that level with each new Rufus release. I was a little disappointed in Want Two, but it has its moments that hit me like that, and overall, I enjoy the CD. However, after a few more listens, I'm really enjoying Release the Stars...I'm really glad he finally put "Leaving for Paris" on CD. Basically, I think the man is a musical genius on so many levels, and I can't wait to see him this summer. |
I agree...I wasn't too impressed...especially since my jaw was on the floor the first time I heard Want One. Going To A Town almost brings me to tears...but to be honest, I've been devoting my time to Tori Amos's new album so I haven't given this album a fair chance. I can't wait to see him live either!

LOVE it. It took me a few weeks, however.
I think he made a big mistake with the tracklist. Putting Going To A Town second is such a buzzkill after your brain has been melted by all the orchestrations on Do I Disappoint You? The first time I listened, it bummed me so bad that I couldn't even remember Tiergarten or Nobody's Off the Hook. Between My Legs finally shocked me back, since I've had a live bootleg of it for nearly 2 years, patiently waiting for him to "finish" it. Sian Phillips' vamping at the end made my crack up, especially once I heard her voice and realized she was the evil witch in Dune and the evil empress from Clash of the Titans. Slideshow instantly jumped into my Top 10 faves. Although, I first listened to the album leak a month early, and I couldn't remember the title. I heard "Lightshow" instead, which I still prefer for some reason. And following that track with the sarcasm of Tulsa is the perfect combination punch. I think Sansoucci turned out nice, too - a real departure from the solo piano version I have of it. He was able to keep the melancholy vibe yet somehow still make it a hopeful song. Ain't noboby at Sansoucci tonight! Release the Stars is the perfect closer. And if you missed his performance of it on Letterman on Thursday, download this NOW: http://www.sendspace.com/file/2ol9p8 If any of you Rufians know Stevie, please send her this song. Old Hollywood really IS over, babe. This is just a reminder thatifyouneedanyofthevariousinternetonlybonustracks send me a PM. So far he isn't coming to Houston, but the Austin date is very tempting. TINY outside venue in downtown Austin, very close to the city's Pink Zone? YES! |

I think my favorite tracks so far are Do I Disappoint You, Slideshow (which I too thought was "Light Show," Rules and Regulations, Release the Stars, Leaving for Paris, and...actually I could keep going. I'm really liking the CD the more I listen to it. And as for that solo piano version of Sanssouci...I'd love to hear it...think you could post it for me?? |

I forgot to mention how much I love the arrangement of Leaving for Paris. The dischord toward the end with the violins makes my head swim. |

I am loving it. "Want One" will always be my personal favorite because the entire thing is just so moving, but this new album is incredibly good stuff and I am digging it right now.
