Stolen riff in "Turn It On"

Anyone ever notice that the riff in "Turn It On" is the same as the one from the Beatles' "I Need You?"

Yeah you're right. I didn't notice it. But I'd say that it it is used 180 degrees different in TIO and one can also say that it is a coincidence. It's a not so typical, organic chord progression that can be found in a lot of songs, I presume. "stealing" is a bit too much in this case. And the Beatles used it as a disturbing counterpart for an overly sweetened melodyline. They even timed it different everytime it's used.

nice find though!

It's uncanny.

Actually, upon listen to the "I Need You" tune, it is quite blatant. Those Beatles should be ashamed of themselves.

Also, please explain how a chord progression that isn't typical can be found in a lot of songs.

That's language. I'm dutch remember? By not so typical I mean, that it is not so type-defining. It's a very simple twochord lick that is not so song-typical as for instance the riff of Oh Well.

I'm sorry if my language sometimes isn't very accurate for what I want to express.

Well I can't play guitar, I can't sing, I'm together with the love of my life, I have overweight, I drink, I smoke, I'm an anti-neurotic, I can write lyrics and poetry....

but I do make films, and I paint on canvas every now and then, so maybe you're right.

I think LB blames this on "cycles" ;)

SortaSavageLike 03-21-2007 04:11 PM

It's not a stolen riff.

It's an organically progressing melodical procession intentionally misappropriated in a decidedly cyclical manner. Duh!

.... on canvas!
