Attention Dumb White College Kids:

Here's the rule of thumb: Don't imitate/mock ethnic minorities and don't give them off-color nicknames. Other than that, have fun, kids! :wavey:

Why are these kids so stupid? How is imitating Mexican stereotypes any different from the blackface minstrel shows? The sh*t's offensive, period! Don't question it. Don't resist it. Just stop it. It's not funny.

I'm glad someone spoke up. As a product of Mexican (2nd generation) and Spanish (3rd generation) immigrants, I find people who perpetuate Latino/Hispanic stereotypes to be ignorant and harmful to our ethnic group. Whenever people make jokes about 'wetbacks' in my presence, they're likely to end up with me exploding and owning their ass. Because, guess what? My forbears were immigrants. And actually, my father's father's mother was full blooded Native American. Though, note, the tribe she belonged to was not north of the Mexican/USA border, so I'm not entitled to free schooling, etc.

I have observed something, lately. It is socialy OK to make racist remarks regarding people of Latino and Hispanic heritage, but of course it is non acceptable to say anything of "African"- Americans or Asian Americans. Why is this? I would love to know. I'm sorry if this sounds incredibly stupid, but do blacks, asians, and whites feel they have a free pass to discriminate against the Latino world? Is it not a fact that without Mexican immigrants, California's crops would cease to be so profitable?

I don't know if any of this makes sense. What I'm trying to say is that Mexican Americans/Latinos/Hispanics seems to be getting the lowest treatment in the U.S.

wow. I'm sorry you have to deal with such idiocy, but I will say ITA with most of what you said. most everyone I know walks on eggshells with respect to African Americans, but it's open season for all other groups of folk.

so, I don't really have an actual comment, just to say that I know what you're talking about and I agree with you.

First off, I agree that the stupidity behind a "South of the Border" party is unbelievable and shows the ignorance and insensitivity of people who attend or throw these parties. However...

But what about hispanic comedians like George Lopez and Carlos Mencia who make fun of these stereotypes as well? As a hispanic, I can't help but laugh and agree with a lot of the things they say - because in most cases it's funny because its true. The same goes for Lisa Lampinelli whom I love and bashes people of all colors, including whites. I'm not embarrassed to laugh at their jokes and I don't feel guilty about it either.

I think the racism you and I have experienced as hispanics has been felt deeply by blacks, asians and many other ethnic people including the muslim community. It's everywhere. Maybe you're referring to the recent uproar surrounding illegal immigrants, whom I feel are much more openly disregarded as a plague on our country, which I think is unfair.

Really I don't agree. Everybody who is financially burdened, uninsured or undereducated seems to be at the bottom of the totem poll regardless of their race.

To be honest, I've never really watched or heard any of thier stuff, so I can't comment.

Yeah, that is actually more of what I was getting at. I was a bit (who am I kidding, very) intoxicated when I posted last night, so my train of thought wasn't too clear.

I don't know....you're probably right, it's just what I've noticed in my own experiences with people around here.
