Has Lindsey disowned "Out of the Cradle"?

Kind of a pointless post, but while I waiting to have my ice cream served at Friendly's tonight, I heard Soul Drifter over the muzak system. I couldn't believe it; in fact, I had such a hard time believing it I ran to the bathroom where it's much quieter, just to be sure I hadn't gone insane! It was the first time I'd ever heard a Lindsey song besides GYOW played in a restaurant, grocery store, hospital waiting room, etc.

So why won't he play anything from OOTC on his solo tour?

Well he is doing Turn It On...

But generally this tour is quiet and acoustic, and generally Out of the Cradle is loud and electric. Plus it's his most commercial album and his new album and tour are not exactly about being commercial. I think the songs just don't fit as well.

YES- he has... and I couldn't be more relieved about it. I have a feeling that he's pretty embarassed about it, actually.

Inherently his weakest solo album, if not only due to the fact that several of the songs are blatant re-writes of his contributions to Tango (Chili, you were spot on in this analysis), its right up there with Go Insane in terms of its datedness (far surpassing GI in the realm of cheese/obnoxiousness, with the vocal affectations and the like).

That's not to say there aren't one or two tracks that stand up in his overall canon- or even a few others that would be decent if they weren't drenched in a heavily dated (even for 1992) Fairlight treatment. It's just that, in comparison, consensus worst UTS track "Flying Down Juniper" ranks better than 90% of OOTC.

I'll never, for the life of me, understand why OOTC is considered such a great album... especially compared to the output Lindsey released before and, well, even after it.

Flying Down Juniper, a song which Lindsey would probably admit himself was rather weak, is better than 90% of OOTC? Now that is a good laugh.

I've certainly never understood the overwhelming love for Out of the Cradle (except for the fact that it's his most Mac-like, and therefore commercial, album) but I would take almost every song on it over Flying Down Juniper.

Yes, he has disowned it. Because of the crappy drum sound.

C'mon, you know you love it when Lindsey goes for the tropical sound on his Casio keyboard.

If he had used a fleshmade drummer on those OOTC tracks, the whole sheen of that album would have been different and it would have stood the test of time, imo. Go Insane doesn't sound that dated anymore to my ears. It did in the nineties, but not anymore... Weird huh?

No, no, no! The crappy drum sound is what makes him so unique and intense and lovably sociopathic and geniuslike!

I'm not sure why a "dated" sound to the album would prevent Lindsey from playing any of those tunes. He had no qualms about reworking "Big Love" and "Go Insane" to suit how his tastes had changed.

I'm sure he could, if he wanted to, very easily play songs like "Don't Look Down," "Wrong," "Countdown," "Soul Drifter," "All My Sorrows" and "Street Of Dreams."

I thought Rumours sounded kinda dated in the 80s but it certainly doesn't now. It is weird. I guess maybe it has to do with trends coming back, just as 80s fashion looked old hat in the 90s, now it seems current because it's trendy again. Or as Lindsey would say it's all about cycles!

Yes, you're right. Lindsey wanted a crappy drum sound to confound fans and push that envelope (of crappy drum sounds). I'm sorry Liddy, I should never have doubted you!

well....to be fair, I ONLY have problems with the no-drummer-approach on OOTC. His punkypoppy-uptempo songs just NEED a real drumfeel. Even if it's himself on a Kleenexbox. On Go Insane, I don't mind, because it falls into the whole concept. I don't see that on OOTC. And after GOS I was totally confirmed in my opinion. Micks drums added ALOT to them.

But in the sparse rythmtracks on UTS, I don't mind the use of electronics.

mylittledemon 02-18-2007 06:37 PM

I would love to hear him do "All My Sorrows" and "Street of Dreams"
