Buckingham teamed up with Stevie Nicks in high school and began his career, as well as their tumultuous romantic relationship, with the band Buckingham Nicks. Though the first album was a commercial failure, Mick Fleetwood was impressed by Buckingham's guitar skills and asked both musicians to join Fleetwood Mac in 1974. The band went on to sell more than 100 million records.
