Gwen Stefani: The Sweet Escape

I was given a promo copy of the album and I really, really like it. it's got a lot of elements that made her first album successful, though not as progressive.

some good ballads, good rap songs, good dance songs. all in all, a good album.

I'm not meaning to hijack your thread, but has No Doubt officially called it quits?? I love them together, and her solo. She's always been too cool!

JazmenFlowers 11-29-2006 08:02 PM

no. reports are that Gwen has said she's not doing another solo album so that No Doubt can do another project.

I guess we'll have to wait and see if it actually happens.

great! I think I would have to put Tragic Kingdom up there within my top....at least 5 albums of all time...maybe 3. I think it came out when I graduated high school. :o and I knew that entire thing front to back. I've loved almost every thing they've put out since. I'll check out the gwen solo album :)

Gwen recently gave an interview with MTV addressing No Doubt:

Stefani first came to fame with the band but left temporarily to give her solo career a shot.

She has a new solo album out next month called ‘The Great Escape’, but thinks it will be her last.

Speaking to MTV Stefani said: "I don't think I will make another (solo album). I can't predict anything, but I don't plan on making one of these solo dance project records, I definitely feel myself going back to No Doubt after this to do a new album."

However, she went on to say that she has so many songs she could fill another album: don't really know what will happen with those other songs, there's probably about ten left over. I could (make) an album with them really fast! So we'll see what happens, I mean you can always use them for something at some point or I could just listen to them myself and be greedy."

Or sell them and be greedy?

Hella **** really.

I don't much care for Gwen as a solo artist. I LOVED "What You Waiting for?", but the glossy pop/hip hop sound doesn't work for me. Im dying for her to go back to her rock roots...

She's got such a bad voice... How come no one has wised up to that?
And not the finest lyricist, I must say.

High on the hills with the lonely goatherd, lay-od-lay-od-lay-he-hoo
Yodell back with the girl and goatherd, lay-od-lay-od-low

Wind it up
Wind it up, uh, uh, uh, uh
Yodellay, yodallay, yodal-low

(Yeah)
This is the key that makes us wind up
When the beat comes on, the girls all line up
And the boys all look, but no, they can't touch
But the girls want to know why the boys like us so much

They like the we dance, they like the way we work
They like that way that L.A.M.B. is going across my shirt
They like the way my pants, it compliments my shape (She's crazy, right?)
They like the way we react everytime we dance

Everytime the bass bangs, realize it calls your name
Let the beat wind you up, and don't stop till your time is up
Get in line now

Wind it up, uh, uh, uh, uh
Wind it up, uh, uh, uh, uh
Yodellay, yodallay, yodal-low

You've got to let the beat get under your skin
You've got to open up, and let it all in
But see, once it gets in, the poppin' begins
And then you find out, why all the boys stare

They're trying to bite our style
Trying to study our approach
They like the way we do it, so original

I guess that they are slow, so they should leave the room
This beat is for the clubs, and cars that go

Everytime the bass bangs, realize it calls your name
Let the beat wind you up, and don't stop till your time is up
Get in line now

Uh, uh, uh, wind it up, uh, uh, uh, uh
(Ya'll ready)

Wind it up, uh, uh, uh, uh
Wind it up, uh, uh, uh, uh
Yodellay, yodallay, yodal-low

Uh huh, it's your moment
Uh huh, come on girl, you know you own it
Uh huh, you know your key is still tick-tockin'
Hell yeah, and you know they're watchin'

Get it girl, get it, get it girl
Get it girl, get it, get it girl
To the font, to the side,
To the back, but don't let him ride

Keep goin' girl, it's your night
Don't let him steal your light
I know he thinks you're fine and stuff
But does he know how to wind you up?
(Come on)

Wind it up, uh, uh, uh, uh
Wind it up, uh, uh, uh, uh
Yodellay, yodallay, yodal-low, hey!

Because she doesn't? She has a good voice, and uses it interestingly. I admit it's taken a beating, and she doesn't have quite the range, but she can definitely sing.

yeah, that song doesn't have great lyrics, but she is a good lyricist. In fact, there have been several brilliant moments. Several. brilliant. Although I admit her lyrics aren't as good on her solo album.

Thanks for the info, jazzy. I love Gwen. Love. I love how well she's aging, how youthful she still is, how buoyant. She's so effervescent and bubbly and sparkly, yet with a deeper emotional edge which she doesn't overuse, but instead it pops up and suprises you during her songs. And her facial expressions are so expressive. Also, I love how she mixes genres so well, it's nice to have an album with lots of different sounds/types/rhythms/etc. on it. I really respect that in artists if they do it well.
I'm not really into the people who think she's not acting her age. As if there is a proscribed formula for how you are supposed to act. You gotta act how you feel inside. She seems so fun, and people have plenty of time to act boring, so I think her buoyancy is very special for her age. Especially her athleticism in performances, that is my very favorite thing. She just seems so full of energy. She is a little bigger than life, exaggerated, and more charismatic and active than your average person, and that is what I like in my people. Like why I like Stevie.
I smell jealous haters....

Yep, she's my girlfriend. If I was a rock/pop star, I would be Gwen. Not because I want to be, but I mean, comparing how I really am with all rock stars...hey, that would be a fun thread...

Well, it's odd that she is doing the whole black bling thing. Kind of annoying. I liked a few No Doubt songs and I even kinda liked that What You Waiting For song.
But, I worked with her once, and had to listen to her do a few hours of interviews. Man...box of rocks city. And about as well spoken as a seventh grader. Plus she lip synched everything and wiped her nose a lot...hello 1977. Not impressed. She's nice though, and her implants look good.

I was wondering if she got implants! How big are they? I don't think she's as dumb as she seems, I just think she talks in that California L.A. way, which sounds dumber, and I don't think she expresses herself as well in person, but her lyrics and some other things about her give me the clue that she isn't actually dumb. I kind of sound dumb when I talk sometimes, too, people underestimate me that way in person quite a bit. I know what you mean, though, I've heard her in interviews, too. I just don't think she is actually dumb. Plus she has that kind of childlike fun expression in her eyes, not a smart and serious expression.
When was the interview? I hope she's not still doing coke with the baby and everything...
And I'm actually really glad to hear she's nice, extra points.
Why was she lip synching? She doesn't lip synch at her live shows...was it for a T.V. performance? Her voice has taken quite a beating, I wonder how much?

Janet 11-30-2006 05:30 AM

I like Gwen. I think she's pretty straight now, with the kid and all.

I have seen her on tv sing live a lot...so she doesn't always seem to lip synch.

Oh yeah, she totally had implants. I would say a high b at the most though, nothing too big.

I can't wait for the new album.

yeah, I can acknowledge she isn't a great singer, but she's got the perfect voice for her sound/genre.

there are times when I think she's a little long in the tooth to be singing "yodelay yodelay yodelow", but then I realize I bust my ass dancing to her songs...

Nico 11-30-2006 02:25 PM

I think she is utterly gorgeous...sort of porcelain-dollish...but I HATE that hair style she has been sporting. It's just really fake, even for her. If she did her own natural hair with bangs it would probably look amazing.

Her music is pretty fun. I like a lot of her first solo album and I'll probably get this one because I happen to like superficial dance music- especially when I run.

I remember a friend of mine sent me a picture of her with her natural auburn hair and she looked even better than she does with blond hair. I wish I had the pic...from one of her videos or something.
