Free Virus Scan?

My sister (who is unemployed right now) let her virus software expire & now she has a virus on her computer. Does anyone know of a good, free virus scan that will find her virus & remove it? I've tried the Panda one & they won't let you scan for free; they try to get you to buy it.

Thanks.

Lee :)

Panda has a free scanner...?? Are you talking about a realtime protector? They make you pay for that one, but the online scanner is free, and does remove viruses (but not spyware or dialers etc) when found. http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

As for a full-time one for your comp, AVG is a great one. I've used it for years now. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti.../lng/us/tpl/v5

I second your AVGFree nomination. It rocks. Once you download and install it, it scans the boot area upon restart. As long as the boot area of the disk is clean, remaining viruses can (usually) be removed easily.

I would suggest NOT using the "scan your computer online" options, as a few of them pack your PC with spyware. (Edit: I've never used Panda, and I'm not accusing it of doing so. But better safe than sorry...)

Actually - good point about Panda. It's safe and reliable, generally, but there have been one or two times that a trojan has shown up (detected by AVG) in the Panda program files. It doesn't happen too often, but even if it does, AVG will remove them before they have a chance to do anythng.

Thanks for the advice. My dad had her go back and do a restore point of a week ago. That did the trick. He didn't think it would work but it did. He told her to download that AVG Free Virus Scan for her virus scan protection. :wavey:

Another very good free antivirus is Avast, it's quite effective and gets continously updated.
