New music of interest...

What is the latest sound? What is good going on sonically these days? I am so sick of hearing about the Loose and Promiscuous Smelly Furtardo or Fergie or Paris or Gwen or Ashley when mostly I don't even want to know these people exist in the first place. I'm an adult, give me something that isn't for dumb kids please...

Like, I really dig this Australian group Wolf Mother. They were on some show live and I thought they were just the tops as Mel Torme used to say. It was heavy stuff though, like The Killers or Hives and all that, but it held onto my ears better.

Also I'm still drawn to The Magnetic Lines despite all expectations. The guy keeps hooking me.

I think people who like Fleetwood Mac would really be impressed with Sarah Harmer's CDs. I have yet to be disappointed with any of her releases.

I've tried Elliot Smith and Iron Wine on reccomendations and was very underwhlemed. I loved Gram Parsons and Byrds but most alt-country-grunge of the past dozen years strikes me as undistinguished. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'd rather put on some of the old '50s country & western and rockabilly stuff, or bluegrass.

There has to be more dope **** out there I'm missing out on, does anyone have a clue? Or should I be satisfied with Sufjan Stevens and The Be Good Tanyas?

 I have her CD and I actually like it. Did you know that Taku plays on one of the songs? It is only on the import CD however, not the US version which is the one that I have.

you're totally speaking my language, sister! i'm not really the best person to ask about *new* music, since i kind of live in my own sonic time warp, with my stevie and dolly and emmylou, but one new(er) singer who has really caught my attention is neko case. her voice is amazing. she's often characterized as alt-country, but i see her more as a torch singer. i have several of her albums, and they're all amazing. i can upload some tracks of hers if you like. another girl with an amazing voice and country(ish) style is jenny lewis. she mostly works with her band, rilo kiley, but she also has a solo album that came out last year (called rabbit fur coat). i'd be happy to upload some of her music too for you, if you like! lemme know. at any rate, i feel your pain ... it's hard for me to find any new music i like, too.

I bought the first two Nelly Furtado CDs and really liked the first one, but Loose/Promiscuous I thought was too dumb and they have been shoving it at us up here way too much. Ivana Santilli (previously of Bass Is Base, not to be confused with the Ace Of Base "product") is much better without having to go all in your face with the supposed sexy thang. Jewel was another one who blew it doing that and looked dumb.

I liked It's A Hit by Rilo Kiley. I didn't know Neko Case was in that. I have some Neko Case (Fox Confessor Brings The Flood) and like it with out being too excited so far.

I have a synthy track by Ladytron I really dig and should look for more by them. Ivy and Zero 7 are along the same lines.

oh, neko's not in RK. jenny lewis is, tho. i really like fox confessor tho, especially "hold on, hold on."

i also really enjoy ladytron. have you heard anything by the shins? they've been around for a couple years now; a lot of people consider them to be the new beach boys. great harmonies.

I'll keep an ear out for The Shins. I love having new music by new groups to get excited about, like when Joe Jackson or The English Beat first hit.

I remember a June & The Exit Wounds track that was almost more Beach Boys than the Beach Boys...

I posted a similar thread not too long ago. I've since discovered a few new bands/musicians that I like.

If you like funky jazz (a la Miles Davis's "On the Corner" album or Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunter"), you might want to check out the last two albums by Joshua Redman, and also a group called Soulive. Cassandra Wilson is also a favorite of mine in the jazz vein.

As far as modern pop/rock goes, I haven't explored it much yet. I like Rufus Wainwright, but others may not; can't think of many others that really grab me, but I'm sure I'll happen upon some soon. The Tower recommended a group called the Innocence Mission that I really like.

NOOOOOO! you don't.

if you're on itunes... go to podcasts and subscribe to "indiefeed." there are a few different categories - pop, modern rock, etc. - and you get sent just about one new song a day (sometimes it's every other day). i've discovered a bunch of great stuff through it. also, a podcast called "bands under the radar." and of course, my fellow canuck, the cbc radio 3 podcast!

if you like bluegrass, alt-country... try alana levandoski. you'd probably also like the weakerthans (try their album "benediction" - sarah harmer sings backup on a track), and palodine (album called "desolate son").
