Read Between My Lines

I just picked up "Read Between My Lines" at my local B&N and I have to say the writing is really not that bad. I have read the introduction and am halfway through the first chapter and have actually learned a few things. She basically search every article ever published and lifted from that. There is an interesting comment from Dolly Parton on the back cover too.

I'm pretty sure you can preview the image at amazon.com.

^ for some reason, that link didn't work for me, so here's a screen grab:

very interesting ... odd to me that dolly would say she doesn't have as good a voice as stevie's. stevie's voice is unique, but when it comes to control and range, i'd say dolly has her beat. how funny that dolly would be in awe of anyone!

All the more reason that it is such a compliment. Dolly is such an iconic figure herself.

It would be interesting, and I have been hooting about them doing a project for years. Now, it might be kind of odd, as Dolly sings about an octave higher than Stevie. Her voice has lost nothing these last 30 years. If anything she has gotten more control, nuance, and shades she can muster in one song. These days it would be tough mix. Their voices would have been stunning together in 1975.

you are absolutely right about dolly gaining control/nuance as the years have passed. her live version of smokey mountain memories from a show last year absolutely brings me to tears ... as does her rendition of stairway to heaven. no way she could've pulled that off with porter wagoner. i still think they could make magic today. mark knopfler and emmylou's voices have very different ranges/timbres, but they're still golden.

but god, now that you mention 1975 ... i would kill for a straight-up country collaboration from back then. oy. my southern heart aches!

No one believes me about Stairway. It makes the hair on the back of my arms stand up. And Robert Plant loves it, btw.

We do need to get married.

How about the voice on the original Sorcerer demo with Dolly ?

....passes out....

the first 30 times i heard that version of stairway, i cried. i still do. i can't help it - even if i tell myself "i'm not going to cry" when i press play, i cry. it is breathtaking. i read that about plant - i told my stepdad that (huge zep fan), but he insists that dolly butchered it. twat. i love all of dolly's covers, actually ... shine, imagine, the trio version of after the goldrush ... be still my heart.

yes sparky, let's get married, as long as you don't mind putting me through school (don't worry, it's a state school). :xoxo:

oh god, sparky, what are you trying to do to me? putting those ideas in my head at 1 am? i'll never sleep! here's another idea: what about sorrowful "sleeping angel" voice with dolly?

OMG. I saw Dolly do this with just an acoustic guitar at the HOB a few years ago. I wept like a f*cking baby.

Awesome.

Okay, here's a corker. Dolly and Stevie do Insider? In 1981.

Just think of the lesbian overtones.
