September 23, 2000, Saturday night. I can still remember sitting there and listening to that cersion with chills.

Great memories. I hadn't been that excited at a Stevie Nicks concert in years. When I recorded that show, I remember squirming in my seat wanting to scream in appreciation because it was truly an unexpected set twist moment. But I refrained knowing that was totally against taper etiquette. There is one slip-up when I start clapping at the beginning of the song :distress:

This is probably my favorite live version of Gypsy ever.

Love Love Love this version.....
Someone needs to tell Stevie and Lindsey that this is the only way they should do the song LIVE ever!.. The full band Live versions just pale to the studio version...so they should just stick to the unpluggled version....Its a shame that Gypsy has only been performed like this once (didnt they realize just how magical it was!..the crowd went nuts).....Im glad I was there in the audience to experience it first hand....It trully did induce chills! |

Thank you so much, I'd never heard this. Exquisite. I like the way the acoustic makes it so Stevie doesn't sound like she is straining. Which, she always usually does on this song, and I don't like the sound of that. It slows it down too much, she has to lengthen the notes too much, and it sounds painful. The pacing of this song is very important. It has to trickle flow, and sparkle along the way, like a small waterfall, or a mountain creek. Continuous, but fairly mild.
But Stevie has always built a dam in that gypsy creek on live performances, trapping the water flow behind a wall, then letting it out too slowly, or too quickly, depending on the phrase...:distress: Sometimes it works for me, mostly it doesn't. Okay, I still like the crappy ones, but not in comparison to the studio, or what could be. There are other Stevie live vocals that suffer from this ailment as well. Part of the reason is the loss of voice flexibility. I haven't ever enjoyed a live Gypsy much, even back in the day (although there are some really creative ones that are astounding - in the way that "I can't believe she is doing that weird thing with the phrasing and notes, but it's really cool") but this one kinda nails it for the modern Stevie voice, IMO. The acoustic shortens the phrases and simplifies and precises them. It doesn't have to be a big monster production in this format, which frees her voice considerably - and we all know that Linds acoustic is a delight as well. Lindsey's guitar work is soul mateingly perfect, genius, etc. |
Thank you -- this is my favorite FM song and this is an incredible version.

So, what do you think about what I said about it's effect on Stevie's vocal? |
