Battle of the Dragon w/ Tom Petty?

There's a thread on Chit Chat about the Uncirculated Rumours 3 LP set being sold on eBay. One of the listed tracks is Battle of the Dragon w/ Petty.

Is this right? I thought I had the complete Uncirculated Rumours...
Anyone have this?

Yeah that's right--Stevie & Tom Petty originally recorded the song in 1984 as a demo.

OMG i didn't know that!! Im downloading it at the moment! Thank you for sharing that!! Just keep a learning more and more... yippee, i just love the "stevie surprises"!

Wow, I've never heard this before. I love the Petty backing vocals.
I wonder if there's a better quality version floating around.
If it was recorded in 1984, was this for Rock A Little?
David?

The recording on American Anthem was destined for Rock a Little. If I can find my tape of Lori Perry's phone call to the person who stole the track, I'll post it. I don't know what Stevie & Petty were going to do with their demo. I vastly prefer this demo because it's just so cool to hear these two on this.

That would be great David. It's interesting how much she actually worked with Tom and the Heartbreakers over the years. I'd love to see a comprehensive list of all the tracks they worked on together, not just the commerically released stuff.

I've never heard it. Interesting.

I love this version, it sounds more complete than a demo though. Maybe the music is the same (it sounds like it for me) and this was an alternate vocal take or test? I could never figure out why Tom Petty was on this at all, it's not like its a real duet. Maybe they were just playing. I like the vocal on this song, it features good examples of the deep 'shudder' sound Stevie was affecting in her vocals from around 1984-1987. If you don't know what I mean listen to a demo or finished track from this period and listen for the word 'well'. 9 out of 10 times it's delivered in a lower key then the one she's singing and the word comes out in a tone which some might call a vibrato but I call a 'shudder' for lack of a better word. A great vocal example of this can be heard in the 'Juliet' demo which features the word 'well' DOZENS of times.

I know! I downloaded this and then realised I'd already got it on a disc ... and sort of went, "Where's Tom?!" :o

I have always found her "Wells" as a sign of insecurity for her lack of vocal range...
You know..trying to overcompensate for that.

Janis_no1 06-14-2006 07:13 PM

It doesn't sound much like a duet.... though i've only listened to it quietly as im at work. This "wells" discussion has me curious, you see i've never examined stevies style of music or different periods so i'm going to go listen to julia and see if i can tell... hope that made sense, sorry im distracted..:o

Well, just make sure it's the demo version of Juliet and not the version on OSOTM. They are two different animals.

Janis_no1 06-14-2006 07:33 PM

Whoops, Juliet, not Julia
