Polygamy

Polygamy is in the news these days and I thought I'd open it up for discussion. As long as all are consenting adults, I could care a less how many wives some guy wants.

The problem is though that I think studies show that often the women are abused psychologically and why can't one woman have multiple husbands?

Again, I think churches, not govt., should marry people and the govt. should give no legal sanctioning at all to any form of marriage. Married people should have to contract inheritence rights, etc.

anyone a fan of Big Love on HBO? that's what the show is built around. it's a really good show and has changed my views on several issues.

I haven't made up my mind how I feel about it. I do feel as you do strand that it's no one's business who you marry, but I just wonder about the emotional impact on the wives and the children...but I guess that's not really my business. so, I'll read others' comments on the topic...should be interesting.

Interesting topic!

I feel as though we as humans are naturally jealous and I just don't see how anyone can be married to more than one person without problems seeping in.

How would that work in terms of like...taxes, anyway? LOL Do you claim that you are married....to four people?

Even though, it's none of my business, I think it's just messy all around.

In my world, there would be no tax detriment or benefit to being married. In fact, the word marriage and/or spouse would appear in no law. I mean if the argument is that gays should not marry and they should quit their bitchin about it because 99.9% of the rights automatically granted to hetero marriage can be obtained via a private document (will, living will, Power of Attorney, etc.) then all marriages should have to obtain such contracts and the govt. has no business automatically giving it to one group and not the other.

madformac 05-10-2006 02:34 PM

I couldn't do it.

I couldn't commit to one wife, let alone four or five.

Besides which it would be so damn expensive. Can you imagine taking the Mrs out to dinner?!?!! Well, I'm not paying for that.

And how big would the bed have to be? No thanks.... :wavey:

That's an interesting point. Is it really true that a homosexual couple can do this with their living wills/private documents and not have them contested in court by family members? Like, if a gay man or woman is on life support and his/her partner is given the right on paper to pull the plug or not to pull the plug, can the family of the terminal individual contest that and intervene?

gldstwmn 05-10-2006 03:43 PM

That Jeffs guy who is on the FBI's most wanted list was supposedly hiding here.
I am a big fan of Big Love on HBO. I wonder if Lindsey has ever seen it.
If these people want to have more than one spouse, then I have no beef with them as long as all parties are amenable. This whole thing with recruiting underage girls to be a wife isn't right though.

No, you cannot contract all the rights automatically given to heterosexual couples. Moreover, you can't really significantly challenge these automatic rights, but you can with much more ease challenge the contracted ones because the world does not really like anything other than hetero marriage. So, they lie when they say almost all the rights can be contracted.

Absolutely. I don't mind spending a lot of money on a woman. But it has to be A woman. The reason I could never have an affair is purely financial, regardless of my wealth. When guys say "it's just not worth having an affair" this is what they REALLY mean....

Nope...Polygamy

Doesnt interest me...Besides, Would ya sleep better at night knowing that more than one woman would want to marry me? Those poor, poor girlies...tsk, tsk, tsk

tynan88 05-11-2006 04:34 AM

I think monogamy is one wife too many, not just polygamy.

Seriously though...I think marriage is important, but that all forms of marriages should be recognised legally as I feel there are many advantages legally from being married with regards to who has certain powers and rights.

What about something like Health insurance? Don't you have to be married to someone to be able to add them to your Blue Cross or whatever?

If people who are not married have kids who's last name should they be given?

In my world people don't work at all. They just sit around and eat as much Ben and Jerry's as possible and never even gain any weight. :)
