Like or Dislike: I Still Miss Someone

I like Johnny Cash's version better. I think I've heard that this song's been remade by a few other artists - anyone know who off hand?

I don't really dislike Stevie's take on it. I don't think it's bad - but I think it could have been so much better. For one thing, I think I would have preferred a simpler, more stark ballad with a softer, vulnerable vocal. The music in this one is too...I don't know...electronic? Robotic? I don't feel anything when I hear it. That silly carnival organ - ugh. Way too much organ (well, fake organ I assume.) I can hardly hear anything else. Except for the tambo or whatever the hell that's supposed to be. Hard to tell, since the only reference to percussion is Rupert & his "programmed drums." There's a nice bass line in there, but it's covered up by layers of crap. And good job whistling, Kelly Johnston. Yes, thanks for that.

Now. The vocal. I ordinarily adore Stevie belting it out, I do. But not here. It's almost as if she's yelling, trying too hard to convey that she's upset about this relationship ending. She didn't need to do that, the words communicate that very well. I think a softer vocal would have worked better. JMO.

I do love the way she sings "baby, when all the love was there." Love it.

Live? I'm not upset that she's never done it live, and it's not one I'd care to see her perform to be honest.

So, did she pick this song because she'd always liked it? Did she pick it for the blue eyes reference, and if so - for Lindsey, or someone else? Did someone say "hey, you should put a cover on this album, how about a Johnny Cash tune?" Thoughts?

I voted for the next to last choice, but the more I think about it, I should've went with the last one. It's a really horrible version that doesn't do the song justice at all, imo.

Johnny's version is great, but I like Dolly Parton's the best. :)

I'd give it a 5 out of 10.

Paula, you need to start doing these threads for some good songs...

I think I posted a bit about this track in another thread, but I think one of your comments really sums it up perfectly: "I don't feel anything when I listen to it." It is indeed a very robotic performance. Stevie just seems to bleat out the words without taking even a moment to consider what exactly she's singing, and of course the music doesn't help things. "Robotic" is a very good adjective. I'll add "monochromatic" - nuanced, this track is not.

I think I also mentioned in another thread how dread... ful... ly... slow... this track is. It just drags and drags. This is not a song that requires four whole minutes to get through.

As far as why she chose to cover this song, I really have no idea. She's never mentioned Johnny Cash in any interviews as far as I know, although we know she grew up listening to country music, and this song would have been a hit around the time she was in her "tween" years. Perhaps it was a favorite of hers as a kid, or a favorite of her grandfather's.

^^^^

I think she recorded it because she was singing about LB - at least she said so in some interview, if I remember it correctly.

Not a favorite of mine.

I think the production is pretty dreadful, but, God help me, I love that vocal. Sure, she probably could have sung it much better about five years prior to when this was recorded, but I still think she put a lot of emotion and heart into the song.

But then I think we've already established that I usually hear things differently than most people!

Actually, I think it's more fun to discuss the "red-headed step-children" of Stevie's catalog. I mean, what's left to be said about "Silver Springs" that hasn't already been said? It's more interesting to talk about "Kick It" and "One More Big Time Rock And Roll Star," and the like.

So bring on "Whole Lotta Trouble"!

Well.....I can't say I really enjoy this track very much....but since I never play this CD, it isn't much of a problem...

....kinda like the the sticky, muggy, tropical weather in Indonesia....I hate the weather over there....but since I don't live there, it doesn't bother me much if at all.

I like both of those a lot more than "I Still Miss Someone" and "Alice"!

I think there was a OMBTRARS (now that's an acronym) thread not too long ago. I remember my comments were that it's really a pretty good song up until that confounded bridge. ooooOOOOUNDAHCOVAHHHHHHHHH!!!

johnny, wouldn't it be weird if you discovered that there were no other people & that the way you heard stuff was the only way that anybody heard anything because there was no anybody & it was only you, hearing stuff in your way, which was the only way?

Hmm, maybe I'm like the autistic son from St. Elsewhere, and you're all fabrications of my mind. That might explain the photo of Jason in the Superman costume.

I got that idea from "The Mysterious Stranger" by Mark Twain.

It's time for a new sig banner for me, Stew. I'm tired of this one.
