Bodeans & Fleetwood Mac

Which Bodeans song do you think sounds most like '80s-period Fleetwood Mac?

dontlookdown 04-08-2006 04:32 PM

i remember when their "big" album came out in the 80's, their sound and the production of that album always reminded me of Fleetwood Mac.
I think it's one of the reasons why people loved their stuff immediately - those songs really got under my skin from the first listen.

They were a great 80's band but I didn't think of 80's FM at the time, I think Keith Olson production/Buckingham Nicks/White album came to mind first. That soft deep buttery drum sound...

Wow. What a interesting post. I love me some BoDeans. I used to go to their shows up in SF. Some of the best shows I've seen live, especially when Lowen & Navarro opened. But anyway to answer your curious question...

I think the one song that sounds a bit like FM (80's style) would be 'Good Things.'

Since the BoDeans are more roots rock style, that's about it. I think they sound like FM from the mid 70's, particularly the BN album and Fleetwood Mac/Self Titled.

Which "big" album, pray tell? They had quite a few. Love&Hope&Sex&Dreams (1986) was their first album that put them on the map even though they were already pretty giant among underground bands.

But commercially, Go Slow Down (1993) was a big hit for them, especially with the hit 'Closer To Free' which ended up on the Party of Five TV Soundtrack. But not until 1996.

I have their entire catalog.

Do you remember their album track "Far Far Away From My Heart"?

Just before "Big Love" was released to radio in 1987, I was waiting avidly for the new Fleetwood Mac album & single. A song came on the radio--a very Fleetwood Macish song but with an updated sound to it, ever so slightly experimental--& I thought, "WOW!! Is THAT the new Fleetwood Mac song?" The DJ identified it as Bodeans.

But now it's just a memory . . . a vague memory, yellowing with antiquity . . . .

Apparently, very vague for you. Of course I know 'Far Far Away From My Heart' which can be found on their album (and my very favorite) Home. Interesting you heard it in 1987 since the album came out in 1989.

Do you have it? I'd be more than happy to get it to you. Let me know, you just let me know.

That song is very Sammy Llanas (one of the lead singers/writers). He had the very raspy voice.

No no no no no no no no no no no no no
I didn't mean that that was the song I heard on the radio. My posts all run together but they cover a lot of terrain. So my first question was: Do you know Far Far Away From My Heart.

But my second question--not really a question but more of a reminiscence--is totally unrelated to the first question. I don't know which song I heard that fateful afternoon in 1987. all I know is that it was while I was waiting for new Fleetwood Mac, & I thought for a minute that it was the new Fleetwood Mac. It was a haunting experience for me, richard, a haunting experience.

Like Jeanette Macdonald dressed in a dirndl & dying of consumption while "gathering swallows twitter in the skies," as Keats wrote.

Ahhh, now, my good friend, David, we're getting somewhere. If this song, from that fateful day in 1987, indeed came off their 1987 album, Outside Looking In, then we're closer to revealing the mystery of your haunting.

Do you recall it being up-tempo or more of a soft ballad? Help me here. I want to help you.

Well I think it must have been sort of a mid-tempo ballady thing. Or possibly with a brisk tempo to show off rhythm & edge. Had it been slow, I probably would remember thinking how odd for a lead-off single.

I think too it must have had some of those breathy hushed vocals that sort of remind one of Lindsey Buckingham layering his vocal tracks so that the overall effect is that all three members of F Mac were singing (when in fact they wouldn't even show up at the recording studio).

do you think it must have come from their 1987 Bodeans album? I think so too.

I must retract my earlier statement. It couldn't possibly come off their 1987 album, Outside Looking In. That album dropped September 1987. Tango released very early that year. Big Love peaked the charts in May 1987.

Which now bring us to their first album (1986) Love&Hope&Sex&Dreams. Under the production of T-Bone Burnett.

Could it be (?):
She's A Runaway (lead off single)
Fadeaway
Still The Night ( a huge concert favorite)

And on a side note, an album cut from this album (Love&Hope&Sex&Dreams) is called Say You Will.

I vote She's A Runaway. I could post all 3 of the above tracks, you suck them down and the mystery will be solved and leave you with ultimate gratification and salvation.

I think you should do that. But don't tell the moderators. Let's just do it quietly & on the sly. I doubt they're reading this thread anyway. In fact, I doubt anyone but you & me is reading this thread.
