This has been posted here a number of times before, and I never understand why people don't figure it out immediately. It's pretty basic arithmetic. Do you not notice a pattern in the numbers you end up with?

10 - 1 = 11 - 2 = 12 - 3 = 13 - 4 = 14 - 5 = 15 - 6 = 16 - 7 = 17 - 8 = 18 - 9 = 19 - 10 = 9
20 - 2 = 21 - 3 = 22 - 4 = 23 - 5 = 24 - 6 = 25 - 7 = 26 - 8 = 27 - 9 = 28 - 10 = 29 - 11 = 18
30 - 3 = 31 - 4 = 32 - 5 = 33 - 6 = 34 - 7 = 35 - 8 = 36 - 9 = 37 - 10 = 38 - 11 = 39 - 12 = 27

And so on and so forth.

Or, a little more mathematically: Any two-digit number AB can be expressed 10A + B, right? 10A + B - (A + B) = 9A. Thus, your answer will always be a multiple of 9. So the "mind reader" program simply assigns the same symbol to all of those multiples and displays it in the crystal ball when you click on it.

Incidentally, this works with any three-digit number ABC as well: 100A + 10B + C - (A + B + C) = 99A + 9 B = 9(11A + B).

And any four-digit number ABCD: 1000A + 100B + 10C + D - (A + B + C + D) = 999A + 99B + 9C = 9(111A + 11B + C)

And any five-digit number... Basically, any number minus the sum of its digits will always give you a multiple of 9. 'T is the nature of the beast.
