Finally saw Elizabethtown

I rented it because I knew it had the great soundtrack :o But, despite not so great reviews, I actually quite liked many moments in this movie. Am I alone around here? I can't remember what people thought of it when it first came out. I think I was just finding it really easy to relate to the two of them, falling for each other even though they shouldn't, the circumstances are bad, and they aren't right for one another. I'm in that right now myself, but sadly, one of our lousy circumstances is that we're separated by four hours. But I digress...

What did everyone think of Elizabethtown? The music is just amazing, of course. Orlando Bloom is a sweetie... Kirsten... gets on my nerves for some reason... But you know... the more I think about it, the more I think I really liked it overall. I'm a hopeless romanic, I admit. And the road trip was pretty cool...

I was away from the board when it first came out so I'll talk about it now.

I loved it. I was really excited to see Elizabethtown because I'm a big Cameron Crowe fan. I read good and bad reviews of the film and I really didn't care since it was a Crowe film and I wanted to see it.

I let out a pretty loud "Yesss!" in the theatre when Big Love came on and my friend looked over at me and I had to explain that it was a FM song. But I am willing to embarass myself for this band.

It wasn't as good as Almost Famous, but AF is one of my top favourite films, so I doubt any other Cameron Crowe films will surpass it.

The music of course was great. I loved the road trip thing (I wanna do that sooooo bad!). Susan Sarandon's tap dancing got a little awkward by the end, like it was just a little to long to the point where you start to feel embarassed for her. But the whole Free Bird sequences with the bird lighting on fire totally made up for it. Orlando Bloom's accent was kind of funny. When he would really get into his acting and get passionate, the American in his voice would dissapear. Oh well.

It comes out tomorrow here (I'm assuming it came out in the states already since you rented it) and I will definitely be adding it to the collection.

I absolutely loved it!!
I left the theater wondering why in the world it had so bad reviews..
I loved the road trip..and the music..and the part where Big Love came on..
and the phone conversation between Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst..and IMO, Susan Sarandon's tap dancing was very sweet. I know a lot of people didn't like the scene, but I thought it was very emotional, in a good way.

I am a huge Cameron Crowe fan and I for one loved this movie. I know many people hated it but I adored it. I saw it at the theater when it was released and from the opening credits with Lindsay singing to the very end with his road trip I was entertained.

the only reason I want to see this is to see my girl Paula Deen. how much is she actually in the movie?

Not very much, as I recall.

I didn't care for Elizabethtown at all. I found it trite and cliche-ridden. Both Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst were horribly miscast, IMO. I simply didn't buy Bloom's "transformation."

I'm so glad to see others liked it, too (and also respect that you didn't care for it, Krista - there definitely were some cliche moments). I love Cameron Crowe, too - I loved Almost Famous - and I have to say, Kirsten Dunst did grow on me ever so slightly by the end. I think I just really connected with their feelings, and it won me over. I also then went and bought four of the songs off iTunes - I looooove Summerlong by Kathleen Edwards....

What part of the movie does Lindsey's song play in?

mylittledemon 02-07-2006 02:37 PM

I thought it was pretty good. I'm of two minds about Cameron Crowe films. I loved Vanilla Sky, which most "fans" of his dislike. I disliked Almost Famous for the most part, which all of his fans love. Oh well.

"Ruckus" the band was the best part of that movie. I will never think of Freebird in the same way.

Paula Deen isn't good with a script. They should have just let her rattle off a few stories instead.

The soundtrack was great, but I found the movie clueless and too eager to please especially American audiences (like with the eagle in fire... give me a break). The acting was strangely poor from Dunst and not surprisingly scaring from Orlando Bloom, who killed the movie, IMO. There were also nice things though:

1) Susan Sarandon and most of the supporting cast.
2) A certain darkness that unfortunately got lost with the two leading actors' overacting.

I' m sure Cameron Crowe can do better.

I was too busy laughing my ass off at the part to notice.

I didn't mean he wanted to be patriotic, but he pushed too hard trying to create a sense of cultural belonging, that was already there. Consciously or unconsciously he filled the movie with a series of symbols making it too confused to be an effective romantic comedy and too superficial and obvious to be anything else. That's why it didn't find a public, IMO.
