SXSW 2006 Pretenders, Morrissey, Neil Young

Things are shaping up nicely. One of this year's buzz bands (already) is Arctic Monkeys....Hayley, are you going this year?

Okay, kids, the easier to read list will be posted very soon. Just giving y'all a heads up now - as always, I will rely on your well-respected recommendations! I bought a badge for this year, and registered the name of my "promotions company" as "I Need More Cowbell." :p I've already been getting stuff in snail mail addressed that way. It will be printed on my badge also. Heh.

Please take some pictures of Morrissey for me if you go see him! :blob2:

You MUST see them. They'll kick your ass six ways to Sunday. They're friggin' brilliant live.

Well, that's sort of the whole point of the conference. Unsigned and/or relatively unknown bands, from around the world, and of all genres, getting noticed. In the last few years, it's also become a place for labels to showcase their "next big things" or for established bands (like Robert Plant last year) to debut live material from new releases. You won't see anything on Pollstar for awhile, they are still figuring out the dates and venues for each band...which will get posted in a couple weeks. The big names have been announced (Pretenders are at Stubb's on March 17, Morrissey is at the Music Hall on March 16).

It rocks!

Try going to the main page first, and then click over to the music section.

I'm not going this year. For the next few years I plan on looking at the schedule when it's announced and crying.

Are you going to see Moz? He's the one I'm dying over. But I can't complain, I've seen him before and will hopefully see him again this year.

The lineups for SXSW, Coachella, & Bonnaroo are amazing this year. I wish I could go to them all.

You know, I never really got on that Smiths/Moz bandwagon...I went on VH1's site the other night, watched ALL the videos. Still does nothing for me...but I'll probably check him out, just cuz it's such an event, ya know? The last 2-3 times he's been scheduled to play around here, he's cancelled, with no make-up dates. So, Moz fans around here are pretty stoked. He's doing an interview with David Fricke also.

I know...

just didnt see any local acts listed is what I meant...As for established acts didnt see anyone I am a fan of (But maybe that may change.)

Brian "Need to move back to Tulsa...The world legendary Cain's Ballroom has to be the best concert venue in the US considering in one week's time in March you have concerts by The Strokes (3/11), The Cult (3/14) & Opeth/Dark Tranquillity (3/17)...Talk about covering a wide variety of rock music" j.

I think there's a growing emphasis on more international bands. Japan nite got so big, they added a second night. A couple years ago, it was all about Franz Ferdinand and the Scissor Sisters. I remember when Bush was the next big thing from the UK. That's another thing I love about this festival - being able to see so many bands, in relatively small venues, sometimes only a few months before they hit it big and start playing arenas. You'd probably be happiest hanging at the Back Room, that's where all the metal bands will be. :p Once they get the full list finalized, you'll be able to search by city of band origin, genre, name of band, etc.

The Strokes are playing here the day before sxsw. So many bands, so little time....

I saw him a few years back and he is still all that. I have this instrumental Smiths track called Money Changes Everything and the first time I heard it I thought it was a Behind The Mask outtake. I think it's unreleased. I'll post it if anyone wants to hear it.

Jake Weber twists me up in ways I can't/don't want to explain. To see both his and Morrissey's name in the same sentence gives me the vapors.

Yes, please post it! Someone just may make a fan out of me yet!

From today's Chronicle:

SXSW's latest get should bring a smile to faces not generally accustomed to doing so: Morrissey, the original Pope of Mope, will sit for an interview with Rolling Stone's David Fricke March 16 at the Convention Center, and preview some pompadoured tunes from new album Ringleader of the Tormentors (shouldn't that be Tormented?) at the Austin Music Hall later that night.
