Maybe the saddest....

... song ever?

I discovered this a couple of days ago. It's called "Goodbye" by Patty Griffin and is stunningly beautiful. But warning: high pain content. It's about someone who committed suicide. "I wonder if the pain ends when you die... and I wonder if there was a better way to say goodbye?" I honestly got a lump in my throat the first few times I heard it. Her voice is unreal - especially the very end.

Um... when I try to play this I get a pop up box saying I'm not authorised and asking me for an Apple password to what I guess is your ID!

 I don't know the song unfortunately, but I like the thread!
We could write about what we think are the saddest songs in general. I 'll think of my selections and I'll be back...

Patty is one of my all time favorite singer-songwriters. Goodbye is a very sad song, but most of her songs are. I'd encourage you to listen to more of her music; but as I've said before about her music, you need to be in an emotionally stong place before you do unless you have time for a mini-meltdown. I am literally restraining myself so as not to carry on and on (and ON!) about Patty and her music. She will break your heart.

I'm so glad you've discovered Patty, but be warned...you've probably just picked up a new addiction!

Kelly :)

I've been a monster Patty fan since a Ledgie, one of the greatest Ledgies ever, gave me Living With Ghosts in 1998. I have a hard time even recommending one of her records to people, because I just want them to get them all.

Goodbye is heartbreaking. Other songs of hers that kill me are Let Him Fly, Mary, Peter Pan, When It Don't Come Easy, and Top of the World. I still remember the first time I heard her sing Top of the World live- it was for the 1000 Kisses tour, before it was officially released. My best friend and I sat there with tears just pouring down. It was insane.

Feel free to go on and on and on. You're right - she's addicting. I must have listened to Goodbye yesterday up to 50 times. Over and over and over. I also bought Carry Me at the same time, which I also love. It's her voice and the words and the emotion conveyed by her voice. The notes she holds at the end of Goodbye... just rip my heart out already!

I'm a glutton for depressing, heart-breaking, heart-wrenching music. I'm thinking I need to get her full albums. Which should I get first? Living With Ghosts or the newer one whose name is escaping me... Flaming Red or something? So glad to have found other fans!

The first time I heard Goodbye, I got a lump in my throat. She's crazy incredible with the emotion. I'm definitely a new fan.

Cat, here are her albums. I'm uploading a song from each.

Living With Ghosts- Let Him Fly
Flaming Red- Change
1000 Kisses- Tomorrow Night
A Kiss In Time (live)- Goodbye
Impossible Dream- Top of the World

The thing is, they're all good. Just different. Living with Ghosts was recorded with her. And a guitar. That's it. It's my personal favorite- the emotion in those songs is incredible, and so raw. Flaming Red is great- has a couple of songs that I actually hate, but what I love on there I love so much- especially Change, Goodbye, Mary, Blue Sky, Peter Pan, Go Now... it's great. 1000 Kisses is great- Stolen Car is a Springsteen cover, and is incredible, as is Making Pies, Tomorrow Night, and Mil Besos. The live album is good, but I pull it out the least. And Impossible Dream is great. I'd say it's her most 'put-together' album. Most people consider it her best.

Patty has a song on the Elizabethtown soundtrack...one of my favorites...'Long Ride Home'. It's about a spouse, assumably the husband (she sings from this perspective sometimes....like in Top of the World.) riding in the limo home from his wife's funeral, reflecting upon all the things he wonders if he might have done differently...now that it's too late. Very similar message to that of Top of the World. In addition to these, and of course Goodbye, here of some of my recommendations....although I am far from a Patty expert. (But I sure do love these songs!!)

'Tony' is about a gay person who kills himself told from the perspective of a former classmate who considered herself miserable as well, and wonders how she would have been so self absorbed as to not notice how fatally miserable Tony was. If that song doesn't wrench emotion from your very soul, I'd be inclined to think you don't have one.

Every Little Bit
Nobody's Crying
As Cold As It Gets
Not Alone
Useless Desires
Truth #2
Rain
Mary
One Big Love
Carry Me
Icicles
Top Of The World
Forgiveness
Perfect White Girls
Flaming Red
Sweet Lorraine
Mother of God
Chief
Making Pies

I have picked up things here and there about some of those songs, but I would love to know more. Of couse, I don't really even have the time for my pre-existing music obsession, so... the Patty obsession will have to take a back burner for awhile.

I'm too classless to enjoy Tomorrow Night or Mil Besos and the like. Sorry, but the fact that my rock -n- roll -n- redneck roots allow me to appreciate her at all is quite a feat in itself. ;) I also love Take It Down, and Whole Heap of Little Horses...both of which are cover songs.

I too am glad to see more Patty fans. Thanks for sharing those songs with everyone Haley. I will try to learn how to share some songs too.

Wow - there sure seems to be a theme with some of her music, eh? A lot of death and suicide. I can't believe I'm only just discovering her.

I recommend...

"It Cant Rain All the Time" by Jane Siberry....That is a song that fits all the descriptions you mentioned.

I actually have a Promo CDR of Patty Griffin entitled "Silver Bell" with the following songs (Cant recall where I received this disc from...But definitely NOT demos and/or unfinished material.) so maybe one of you fans can clue me into which albums these are officially released tracks from (Unless "Silver Bell" is the name of the release...Has 3 untitled live tracks tacked unto the end of the disc):

Little God
Boston
Perfect White Girls
Truth #2
What You Are
Silver Bell
Driving
Sooner or Later
Top of the World
Sorry & Sad
Making Pies
Mother of God
One More Girl
Standing

Another Patty griffin song I love,
from a KCRW 2004 in studio performance:
http://s27.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3...52A9PD468XKM8X

Kite Song

The Sunday after there was laughter in the air
Everybody had a kite
They were flying everywhere
And all the trouble went away
And it wasn't just a dream
All the trouble went away
And it wasn't just a dream

In the middle of the night
We try and try with all our mights
To light a little light down here
In the middle of the night
We dream of a million kites
Flying high above
the sadness and the fear

Little sister just remember
as you wander through the blue
The little kite that you sent flying
on a sunny afternoon
Made of something light as nothing
Made of joy that matters too
How the little dreams we dream
Are all we can really do

In the middle of the night
The world turns with all of it's might
A little diamond colored blue
In the middle of the night
We keep sending little kites
Until a little light gets through
