I would love to have seen this - and know exactly how EO17 lyrics were used in "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."

Lauper and girls still having fun
By Sarah Rodman
Monday, December 19, 2005

Cyndi Lauper may be 52 but she knows girls still want to have fun.

So, Saturday night the quirky Brooklyn songbird invited two equally quirky friendscomic Sandra Bernhard and singer-songwriter Jill Sobuleto join in on the good times and the results were fittingly merry.

Just as she did at Mixfest in September, Lauper proved that no rust has corroded her impressive pipes. In an hour and forty-five minute performance promoting the rearrangements of her classic hits that can be found on the recent The Body Acoustic Lauper yelped, crooned and wailed with both power and passion.

Clad in black leather pants and a midriff baring jacketyou should hope youre belly button looks so good at that ageLauper pounded the stage with a hammer to introduce the hard rock guitar whomp Change of Heart, which featured a fiery guitar vs. violin duel between axewoman Kat Dyson and fiddler Allison Cornell. She frequently bolted out into the audience including a run through during the roof raising Sisters of Avalon. She stripped back She-Bop to a bluesy number full of yearning and even sang a bit of Good Enough, the theme from Goonies to the delight of diehards in the 2/3 capacity crowd. Money Changes Everything was a showstopping set closer.

The ballads sparkled with equal vocal quicksilver as the delicate True Colors and a sublime Time After Time found Lauper substituting sheer power for nuance as she strummed her trusty dulcimer and Cornell provide warm color with her lyrical violin passages. The platinum tressed singer also briefly dropped her wacky Noo Yawker shtick briefly to wax eloquent on the grace of Judy Shepard, mother of hate crime victim Matthew Shepard and the subject of love and tolerance before singing the exquisite new piano ballad Above the Clouds from atop a seat in the front of the auditorium. She also got into the seasonal spirit with the amusing polka Minnie and Santa and Home on Christmas Day.

She closed out the night by inviting Bernhard and Sobule onstage for a rousing acoustic rendition of All the Young Dudes and a percolating ska take of Girls Just Want to Have Fun that Bernhard nonsensically but amusingly hijacked with choruses of Stevie Nicks Edge of Seventeen.

Bernhards own middle set was deeply erratic she herself decided she might be having a breakdownbut still entertaining as she harangued the current administration, hummed her way through Carol of the Bells and did half-joking renditions of Whitesnakes hair metal chestnut Here I Go Again and 4 Non Blondes Whats Up?

The incredibly charming Sobule opened with a set of her winsome and wicked folk pop and capped off with her iddy 90s hit I Kissed a Girl.

I'm a huge SB fan, I'm so bummed they are not bringing this tour to the west coast :( I need a Sandi fix bad! It's been a while since I've seen her live. And yes, for those of you who remember Without You I'm Nothing Sandra's always been a huge Stevie fan so I'm not surprised she busted out some Edge lyrics.

I'm sorry, Merry Christmas & all, but are you f*cking HIGH?!?!?! What were you thinking? You were so excited about going & you GAVE them AWAY as a GIFT?!?! I'd be kicking myself too if I were you. Really hard. Right in the head.

BTW - why wasn't I the friend that got those tix? Yeah, yeah, you're 400 miles away & we don't really know eachother. I don't care. Cyndi isn't coming anywhere near me anytime soon & I'm still sulking. So there. :(

I had to. I'm actually kind of mad at you for that!! I've never seen Cyndi is why...:p Seriously, I hope your friend was very greatful and joyful. Because that was quite the sacrifice.
Oh, and step off the free tix, Paula.  so what if I live exactly across the country?

From 12/6/05. Great quality.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Cyndi and Sandy let loose on this) - http://s52.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3...H3GWHULX221R7H

All the Young Dudes - http://s52.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1...C3ESAR7KGZLE0A

Cyndi's voice, man. It's the eighth wonder of the world.

I've seen Sandra perform a few times and she is hilarious...smart as **** and as witty as they come. I adore her. The girls need to take this show across the country...it's been awhile since Sandi has come to Texas.
And yes, she is a HUGE Stevie fan...remember that fabulous interview she did with Stevie for MTV a few years ago when Sandra was very pregnant? It was hysterical...she loves her some Stevie!

She had a blast. I've seen Cyndi, Sandra, and Jill all separately, so I can't cry too much over it. Download those songs, though, your jaw will be on the floor. Anyone who says Cyndi has lost even the tiniest bit of range is full of ****. She's a better singer now than ever.

Thanks! I love this song, and I love Cyndi - can't wait to listen!
p.s. I have never seen her live, and have always wanted to. I did stand next to her once - man, she is tiny!

Ok, I jist listened; amazing, beautiful, her voice is like a charge of electricity!
Dulcimer enthusiasts must be pretty excited about this too.

Isn't her voice out of this world? Not to mention her energy, my word. I got this bootleg and couldn't believe my ears. I read a review of this show and it said that she jumped down into the audience for "Money Changes Everything," hopped onto the back of some fan, and got a piggyback ride down the aisles. And she actually hammered onto wooden boards during Change of Heart and spontaneously added songs to the set, including Christmas tunes. Must have been something else to have been there.

Glad you liked them!

Oh, my. Thank you. You are right about Cyndi's voice. 8th wonder. What a gift.
I'm loving the harmonies on all the young dudes. *sigh*. Sandra's voal tone lends some nice depth and gravity to Cyndi's balloon. If that makes sense.

That sounds like a blast. I've been listening to The Body Acoustic quite regularly for the past few weeks and I LOVE the version of Money Changes Everything on there. And if one were to judge from that song alone...yes, you are right, her voice is an amazing instrument. There's much more range, depth, and richness to her voice now than ever.
