Stevie's Microphone
Does anyone know when Stevie started to hang things off her microphone.....and what it means to her??????? :blob1:

Hmmmm!?
I don't know exactly when Stevie started hanging ribbons off her microphone... But I do know that she didn't always hang as many as she does now.. she only used to hand about 3 or 4.

If you mean flowery, decorative ****, she started doing that on the Mirage Tour, when she festooned her mic stand with a (relatively) small strand of fake flower blooms (although sometimes on the Tusk & Bella Donna tours, she would hang a single rose & stem from the stand). Also, there were occasions on the Penguin Country Safari Tour (1978) when Stevie would hang her feather headdress on her mic stand. Finally, round about the time of the Tango in the Night Fleetwood Mac tour, it reached ridiculous proportions with stupid colored ribbons hanging from her crescent tambourine ... & before too long, ribbons were added to the mic stand until the entire stage was awash in stupid ribbons. |

I'm watching a Las Vegas DVD right now, which I finally have access to a zillion years after everyone else, and was just thinking enough with the ribbons. It seems to give Stevie something to do while she sings, playing with them, but it's a little distracting. |
Did she copy it from Steven Tyler?

It's probably an old hippie/hard rock convention. Certainly the ugly dude in Aerosmith used to hang that scarf of his from the boom, & I think Robert Plant used to festoon his boom with all sorts of frilly, bohemian stuff. In Stevie's case in the old days, it was generally when some stupid fan would throw a rose at her onstage (or sometimes a bouquet in the green wrap with a single ribbon around it) that she would go pick it up & then hop back to the mic to finish her vocal, while trying to intertwine the rose stem around the boom. Everybody in the world is stupid, is my conclusion. Except for Jacques Barzun (who does not festoon his mic stand with garlands of ribbons or other detritus). |
I love the ribbons on Stevie's mic stand... especially the ones I got after Fleetwood Mac's final show in Detroit in 2004... :o

(Incidentally, a 'stupid fan' is any fan who isn't ledge fan -- i.e., it's all the others 'out there') |
We have ribbons, rosary beeds, mardi gras beeds, roses, etc etc etc.
It is more of a comfort thing nowadays, IMHO. It gives her something to play with, something to do with her hands. If you want to watch something really cool, check out HSML from the Friday Vegas boot. Stevie winds the ribbons around her wrists like she is binding herself up. It is kinky and cute at the same time. She is very obvious when she is doing it so don't worry about missing it, you can't! Stevie did some sexy things during her week in Vegas. :p  |

I think she just likes how they look. It goes no deeper than that. |

...or Red Rocks '05. She got her beads stuck in her shawl during the SB kick.....then the final twirls....beads went everywhere....and you can see a string of them twirling with her! I laughed so hard that night. Poor Waddy probably lost an eye. |

Oh - and the ribbon colors changed to red, white and blue after 9/11. :) |

I think Stevie started this way early on - Pretty much when she first joined FM, 1975 or so (I've seen old photos). But yeah it got more elaborate over time. I think probably it eventually became a roadie's job, and I would bet that's when it became more elaborate. 1983 or so sounds about right on that, to me. I don't think there's any special meaning - it's just is part of her whole mystical "stage persona" thingy and sorta suits her personality. (It's sorta "girly" and "rock" at the same time.) |
