Carlos Rios

In a lot of steive's shows, I've noticed she says that Carlos "helped her" or something to that effect. I also found that people on this board don't like him. Could someone please tell me how he helped her, and why he's so disliked?

I think Waddy's shoes were impossible to fill after the Rock a Little tour. Fans at the time, at least the ones i talked to, noticed a real change in the arrangements and style of her Other Side of the Mirror set list..the songs were more tepid. Plus, they would do hammy stuff on stage like that stupid drum stick throwing thing...very lame-o. maybe that's why he's not liked, he's not a superstar rock guitar player, merely a very good one. But, he stuck with her through sucky tours and some sucky performances during that 89 - 92 era...so he's loyal it seems, so that counts for a lot.

I don't like Carlos more for what he represents than for what he actually is. He represents to me a conceptual move toward a deliberate blanding out of Stevie's show -- Kenny G. didn't tour with Stevie in 1989, but he easily could have. His "smooth jazz" sound (which I find reprehensible) would have fit easily into the band that year. Stevie has demonstrably bad instincts in putting touring bands together, & Carlos is just a signpost of that phenomenon.

Don't forget the mullett! (Carlos', not Stevie's)

He stuck with her through the klonopin years when everyone else was bailing...Lindsey, Waddy, etc etc. He became the musical director and I thought the Mirror tour SUCKED. Stevie was blahsville and the band was pretty lame without Waddy. Her Enchanted band was the best Non-Waddy band, IMHO. When Stevie talks about Carlos sticking by her and helping her get onstage, she is referring to the klonopin years. He has been around through alot of ****.

apparently, he also cracks her back before each show.

Personally I like Carlos. I definitely did not like his Edge guitar work, but I've met him a couple times, and hes really a nice guy.

Ugh! I couldn't stand the lead guitarist from that tour (that guy with the blonde curly hair...I can't remember his name right now!). I even prefer Les Dudak (from the '89 and '91 tours)! It's Waddy or bust, in the end. Any band of fantabulous musicians she could possibly assemble just can't live up to any band that includes Waddy. He catapults her band into the stratosphere. There's just a chemistry there. She's always had awesome percussionists, too. It's hard to beat the '81 band..............

Ever since Waddy came back shes done no OSOTM songs in her live set. :distress:

I like Carlos, he's a nice guy, at least he was when I met him. I'm glad that he stuck by Stevie and helped her through her rough years. But no one can ever replace Waddy.

Carlos seems very kind & gracious. I think Stevie's long past the point of having antisocial assholes in her band. All the support staff these days is exemplary: Brett, Neale, Carlos, Sharon, Mindy or Mandy or Mina or whatever her name is, Taku, etc.

They're all swell people.
