Guilty of sex with student, teacher avoids prison
Attorney abandons insanity defense in plea deal for 'tired' client

Debra Lafave leaves the courthouse Tuesday after pleading guilty to two counts of lewd behavior.

Debra Lafave, a former remedial reading teacher at Greco Middle School in Temple Terrace, Florida, pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior, and was sentenced to three years of house arrest followed by seven years probation. She also must register as a sex offender.

She could have faced up to 15 years for each count filed in Hillsborough County. She also could have been charged in Marion County, because one of the incidents happened there.

"I want to apologize to the court, to the young man involved and to his family for my actions," Lafave said. "I accept full responsibility for my actions, and I am very sorry for everything which has occurred."

A 14-year-old boy told investigators he had sex with Lafave three times in four days in June 2004, according to court documents. One of those times was in a car while his 15-year-old cousin drove them around, he told authorities.

He also said she performed oral sex on him multiple times, including once at her home, the documents said.

Defense attorney John Fitzgibbons said he began negotiating the plea deal Monday after he deposed the boy's cousin.

"We believe that this was a very fair resolution of this case," Fitzgibbons said, adding that Lafave avoided prison time with the plea and will be allowed to continue her mental health treatment.

"Very importantly, it allows the young man involved here to go on with his life, just as Debbie can go on with her life," he said. "He does not have to participate in a trial or deposition."

Fitzgibbons had originally planned an insanity defense, saying earlier this year that Lafave had "some profound emotional issues" and that "once anyone reads what the doctors have to say, they will understand a lot more."

Asked how she felt after the plea deal was announced, Lafave said only, "Tired."

It was a change of heart by the boy's parents that made the plea deal possible. At first, they had insisted that Lafave serve at least three years in prison, but they recently relented, allowing prosecutors to strike the deal before the trial began.

"Because of the media coverage of these cases, I fear that proceeding to trial will negatively affect my son's emotional and psychological well-being," the boy's mother said in an affidavit filed in Hillsborough County on Tuesday.

She added that her son did not want to testify and merely "wants to resume his life in as normal a manner as possible."

What a lucky guy! She is certainly hot and someone needed to teach that 14 year old the birds and the bees. Interesting though..because this really challenges sexism. It's getting more common place now for women to get in trouble for playing around with minors. My first sexual experience at 16 was with a 31 yo woman. I never said a damn thing...I was happy to have the experience. I think most guys are like that. Had the genders been reversed though...there would indeed be prison time. The conservative side of me thinks she should be treated just like a man would have been.

She should have spent time in jail. I bet if she was a much older woman or an unattractive woman or a man, they would have tossed her buns in jail. If this had happened to my son, I would have wanted her in prison so she would learn the lesson of what happens to someone who preys on another person:eek: I was watching the clip of her in court and she was smiling and looking like she just won the freaking Miss America pageant. I just wanted to slap her silly:lol:

For sure. She certainly got a slap on the wrist. Even though it was consensual, it is still illegal and she was in a position to take advantage of this kid.

I haven't seen this woman but everyone says she is a hot piece of ass, so to speak. So of course she got a slap on the wrist. Of course if the older party were a man there would be harsher consequences. And God Forbid the teacher and student were both male. The teacher would be crucified.

I was a little beast in high school and got involved with more than one individual over 30. I was thrilled and I am sure they were too. No law was going to stop me. I pursued them. They probably should have had some restraint, I guess. But I was persistent.

Of course she looks like a stripper. I find that immaterial to my opinion about her behavior. But it has everything to do with how the legal system and the press handled her. Every straight male reporter, radio commentator, and probably all the officals involved are wishing it had happened to them.

and as a late addition to her sentence, she will have to go see a David Lee Roth concert....:distress: :lol:

everyone around here has been getting off easily. that teacher who hit and killed two kids before driving off and hiding out? probation. this chick who sleeps with little boys? house arrest.

People tend to look the other way here if the older man is still a teen or maybe 20 and the girl is in her upper teens. But if it is a man in his twenties or older and the girl is under 18, people still get in a lot of trouble. It just isn't reported much. It isn't newsworthy but it does get prosecuted.

No. It's less icky for an older woman to sleep with a younger man. People don't view it so maliciously. And of course, all the cases I've heard, the guy has been like, 12-14-16 years old. :shrug: I think that makes a difference. It's not like some guy sleeping with an 8 year old. :shrug: I'm not saying it's more right or wrong, I'm just saying it's viewed in a very different, ie less harmful and predatory, light. :)

Well, maybe in Aus. it's different. Here, I can guarantee you it's viewed as more predatory. :)
Also contributing to that is the fact that men are more often caught with preteen and younger girls. Women rarely are caught with anything younger than a teen. Obviously, that makes the men more gross.:)
