Stevie, and the influence of TV

I read an interview a while ago in which Stevie's LA home was reported as having had a TV in every room, each one on at all times. I have also have heard her (in radio interviews) mention that she watches TV.

This article from
US Weekly, June 11-18, 2001, also describes her viewing habits:
Quote:

But today, at 53, her only addiction is to daytime soap operas (“I manage to watch every day between noon and three”) and nightly jogs on her treadmill while watching shows like Judging Amy and VH1’s Behind the Music. “I’ve seen every one, from Motley Crue to John Denver, with tears running down my face,” says Nicks. “I had no idea everyone had such a hard time.” And her own VH1 profile? “I can recite every word,” she says.
Rolling Stone, 2001:

Stevie Nicks Solo Album
In 1994, Stevie Nicks was watching the O.J. Simpson trial when she came up with the title of her next album: Trouble in Shangri-La.
We know that Stevie likes to read, and that there are literary references in some of her songs, and several of her songs draw inspiration from old Hollywood. A song like "Jane" for instance, strikes me as a song that might have been inspired by her seeing a television program about Jane Goodall, rather than from her reading of a biography.

Which songs do you think might have been inspired by a program on television? Think, perhaps, even of songs that you have believed were about personal experiences.

Interesting! I have always believed that "Gold Dust Woman" was influenced by an episode of "The Rockford Files" in which there is a crime out on an Indian reservation, & one of the Indian women gets sick & lies in bed & sings.

Stevie once said that "Crying in the Night" was influenced not specifically by a TV show but by the TV actress Lesley Ann Warren, who played Mae in "The Daughters of Joshua Cabe on TV in 1972.

What I wonder is just where Stevie gets the time to read Wilde poems & stories what with all that TV watching in her household. Does she read condensed versions of it? Reader's Digest?

Get outta here! I like the VH1 BTM's, but in my opinion they are always over dramatized. I'm sure everybody had a hard time, had lots of bad stuff happening and had many fall backs, but they only focus on that. They add depressing piano music and the saddest pictures/images they can find and it makes you want to run towards the nearest razor while watching it. That's my opinion about Stevie's BTM also, but I guess if she is happy with it...

Oh, I remember her saying somewhere that in the early 90's she was addicted to some sci-fi show on tv. Can't remember which.

Yep, I agree 150%. Those peeps haven't had it any harder than a lot of us but coz they're bigtime rockstars, it's like *oh poor me*. Give me a f**king break. Even Stevie's turned me off. If someone did a BTM on some peeps I know, you would grab that razor. Gawd. Makes for interesting drama tho. I didn't know she watched that much TV. For some reason, it doesn't sound like Stevie. No wonder she didn't write for a long time! Get off the soaps, Stevie and start writing!

Channel 11, KTTV (before it was Fox) used to have a great midday movie. I think the host's name was Ben Hunter. There was also a "Million Dollar Movie" on KHJ channel 9 I have often thought that "You Could Forget" and "Garbo" were inspired by watching some old movies on local LA TV.

Of course, I have just given away my own childhood tv watching habits. ;^)

I hate TV for the most part...but yet I found myself huddled around a TV with 3-4 people watching this every week...usually a bong was passed around as well. Ahhh...I do miss those days.

And for the record, Dr. Crusher, with her medical-tech talk really turned me on. I wanted her to scan me with that damn tri-corder.

When I noticed that she had a song about Rappaccini's daughter, I just assumed she had read it in a High School English short story collection.

i found that really depressing when i read she watched soap operas and other garbage on TV. I had images of her eating snickers bars and pints of Hagen Daz.

what's up with that? she lives in a beautiful part of LA, right up against the mountains with easy access to hiking trails and gorgeous beaches.
you don't watch tv during the day in LA! you go outside and live life!

just my 2 cents....

the only shows worth watching are Curb Your Enthusiasm, 24, The Daily Show,
and Six Feet Under (RIP)

I agree those shows are worth watching, but I think Stevie has lived plenty after 30 years in Fleetwood Mac, and years of being on the road!
If she wants to relax and watch TV now, that's her choice to make and enjoy.

You haven't traveled much, have you?

People locked in their hotel rooms in strange towns throughout the world spend most of their off-hours watching TV.

MacMan 11-23-2005 05:42 PM

Well maybe some of her inspirations were lifted from story lines on All My Children... Wasn't/Isn't she a massive fan of that soap?

Yes, the few people I have known in touring bands spent a lot of time in their hotel rooms, watching cable.
I would guess that Stevie, at the height of her stardom would not have felt comfortable, say in a State park, or on a beach, or wandering around town. She is like the Lady of Shalott, with a TV instead of a mirror. :D

If I had time tonight, I would Photoshop her into a Waterhouse.
