Major Quake Off Coast of Honshu

Major quake (prelim mag 7.3) off east coast of Honshu, Japan, about fifteen minutes ago (1:40 Pacific time).

May have triggered local tsunami activity, although eastern Pacific basin has no watch or warning in effect.

Stay tuned ...

I blame your channeling the ghost of Kenji. You upset the cosmic balance.

 You're worried about an earthquake 1/2 a world away when a 3.4 just hit Ocotillo Wells, down by Salton Sea a few minutes ago (2pm straight up) ? (and, just a matter of a couple of hours after a 3.0 hit 200 miles up the San Andreas?)

A tsunami from Japan isn't going to affect us in Anaheim/Orange, David...it probably wouldn't even raise the level of the Santa Ana River more than a couple of inches.

I am creating a mental mash-up of "Ugetsu" and "Riding Giants"*

*disclaimer* please note that I don't mean to make light of any possible harm that may befall people from a tsunami, even though clearly, I am making light of it.

All clear. Revised magnitude 7.1.

A minor tsunami was generated along Japan coasts near the earthquake epicenter. A tsunami is not expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, BC & Alaska coasts, although some of these areas may experience small sea-level changes.

Glad to hear the worst is over. I'd hate it if my patio furniture was knocked over.

I read the tsunami waves might get to 20inches height....
and I've seen three magnitude measurements: 6.9, 7.2, and David's 7.3.
EDIT: make that four: add 7.1. Appreciate the update David.

The USGS revised mag is M6.9. Moment mags are always going to fluctuate in the early stages of computation because measuring the seismic moment (what is measured to derive the moment magnitude) is a complex process. It can take several hours for magnitudes to revise.
