Arrest Warrant Issued for Tom Delay

AUSTIN, Texas (Oct. 19) -- A Texas court issued a warrant Wednesday for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay to appear for booking, where he is likely to face the fingerprinting and photo mug shot he had hoped to avoid.

Bail was initially set at $10,000 as a routine step before his first court appearance on conspiracy and money laundering charges. Travis County court officials said DeLay was ordered to appear at the Fort Bend County jail for booking.

The warrant was "a matter of routine and bond will be posted," DeLay attorney Dick DeGuerin said.

The lawyer declined to say when DeLay would surrender to authorities but said the lawmaker would make his first court appearance Friday morning.

The charges against the Texas Republican stem from allegations that a DeLay-founded Texas political committee funneled corporate money into state GOP legislative races through the National Republican Party. Texas law prohibits use of corporate money to elect state candidates.

DeLay is charged with conspiracy to violate state election laws and money laundering, felony counts that triggered House Republican rules that forced him to step aside as majority leader.

Two separate indictments charge that DeLay and two political associates had the money distributed to state legislative candidates in a roundabout way -- sending it from the political action committee in Texas to the Republican National Committee in Washington and finally back to candidates' campaigns.

DeLay has denied wrongdoing.

The effort had major political consequences, first by helping Republicans take control of the Texas Legislature in the 2002 elections. The Legislature then redrew congressional boundaries according to a DeLay-inspired plan, took command of the state's U.S. House delegation and helped the GOP retain its U.S. House majority.

When his mugshot is taken on Friday, I'm printing it out and taping it to the door of my apartment for everyone to see when they pass by. I think it will complement the Coultergeist doll hanging from my doorknocker quite well, personally.

Oklahoma have you? Trust me, More Democrats went down in the fraudulent check scandal than Repubs/Indy's

Not to mention when our former Democratic Governor Waters help line up jobs for his pals with the Oklahoma Turnpike Commission, Jobs they never performed and when the proverbial crapwad hit the fan, the "outraged" public found out and let him know at the polls in his re-election bid (The first Democratic governor in state history to not be elected in a re-election bid).

I see crooks on both sides, Always have and will and not just the right....And with the current BS going on here in my home state things havent changed at all (The main reason I am an Independent.)

Piffle my dear! the Dems cant hold a fricken CANDLE to the shenanigans of the Evil Elephant GOP crowd! I'd say hijacking two elections, manufacturing a war and bringing our country back to financial ruin (not to mention cutting slack to multinationals to pack up and go overseas and leave whole TOWNS destitute and on and on....)
oh NO the Dems got a LONG way to go to catch up with the GOP.
Nuff Said.

estranged4life 10-19-2005 08:37 PM

Nationally that's true...

but I am talking locally. National politics is always the same ol same ol.

Locally the Demos are just as crooked (Ask the screwed-over Union members here...Oh wait, That's if you can find any.)

Hell, Like I said before, what's the difference between an Oklahoma Democrat & an Oklahoma republican? Nothin'...Same beliefs, morals, etc.

I think those people that make up the minorities and alternative lifestyle communities will tell you "how wholesome" the Democrats of this state are.

I would love to see if his mugshot will be in the same hall of fame as Nick Nolte's and Michael Jackson's. He deserves what he gets. Now if only more politicians were apprehended, if they are corrupt.

The Austin Chronicle (weekly liberal/entertainment rag) traditionally does a Halloween mask as the cover of that week's issue, and it's usually a political figure. I'm betting this year will be Tom DeLay. And bonus points if they use his mug shot.

The Best of Austin issue was last week - they created a category just for him - biggest political scandal, something to that effect...

When I saw this on CNN today I felt warm all over as if I was sipping on a snifter of cognac or some good Napa cabernet sauvignon.Definately something to be savored.
