Recording a concert?

Well, I know this doesn't pertain to FWM.. But I'm going to the Jethro Tull concert next saturday and I'd like to record it. Has anyone here recorded a concert before? I don't know the best way to do it if it's to buy one of those stereo voice recorders? anyone know?

thanks
Ian

Nah, it will turn out like a dung heap. The only way you're gonna get a decent sound is right off the soundboard or somehow manage to mic the PA. I'd scratch that idea. Besides, if you get caught you could get seriously ruffed up by the security.

Ah, okay. I figured because of the loundness etc. The soundboard is impossible to get unless the band releases it right?

Well yes and no. The reason most soundboard recordings get "out there" is because one of the roadies and/or engineers involved let it get out there and sell the masters right from the board.

Hi Ian...

having personally recorded over 20 Stevie Nicks/FM shows, I think i know a little bit about this ;)

PM me and I will let you know as much info as possible so you can get the best recording you can.. Though I can tell you right off the bat that MOST of what will give you the best sound possible is the kind of microphone you use... Never use a built in mic of any recorder, because they are not designed to handle the heavy bass of a live concert and will only result in distortion..

PM me and I will give you some more info.. :wavey:

Seriously ruffed up by security???

Nah, i wouldn't say that... the worst that could happen is they confiscate the device and/or the disc/tape itself...

and yes, of course a soundboard recording is going to give you the best sound, but you can definately get a "decent sound" by using the right equipment, being in the right location, etc..

Oh of course. It really depends on the microphone you use, and of course, where you sit. You dont want the recording to be washed out by audience noise, like so many "boots" are.

The security comment was tongue-in-cheek.
