Well, feck. I had to go with Billie.

Neal 10-07-2005 06:38 PM

I'm more familiar with Billie's stuff, so she gets my vote.

shackin'up 10-07-2005 06:39 PM

billy. hands down.

ontheEdgeof17 10-07-2005 06:39 PM

I went with Billie as well.

Jesus Christ, man! Quit copying me!

I really do love Ella, but I went with Billie. There are days when I'd prefer Ella, but I think overall...it's Billie. Her music has more of a blues feel, and she's a more emotional singer.

Not a big jazz fan. Oh well, Ella gets my sympathy vote, someone has to be the first ;)

o.t., I know it's the weekend but what are all us europeans doing up so late!

Voted for...

Billie Holiday...I actually own a cd of her music and while I havent played it as of late I remember the music being quite good and her vocals are very memorable.

Ah, now this is interesting... My heart says Billie, my head says Ella.

In the end, I went with Ella, simply to give her a boost in the votes.

Both were fantastic vocal talents, though in incredibly different ways. Billie could wring more emotion out of a single note than anyone before or since, really. Something in her voice just penetrates right to the pit of your heart and tugs so gently but so desperately. She was a brilliant artist, but Ella was a true musician. Her voice was her instrument, and she played it with as much virtuosity as Satch played his trumpet. The lines she could invent and the notes she could hit and the tones she could find... nobody else could do that, and very few have ever really tried. "Mack the Knife"/"How High The Moon" - in 12 minutes there's everything you need to know about Ella's place in music history.

Doesn't matter who wins this round, though, as long as it encourages folks who haven't really listened to either of these ladies to give them some time.

Just wanted to say I really enjoy reading your posts on music and artists :)

I'm a bit surprised at the disparity so far

Me too, although I think in general, folks just seem to be more familiar with Billie than with Ella. She's probably a bit more accessible to non-jazz fans, what with all of her ballads and torch songs, as opposed to Ella's vocal gymnastics.

Actually, this post is just an excuse to bump this thread back to the top of the list...

I love them both, but I listen much more to Ella, so she's my choice.
