Hustle and bustle: J. Lo got back, Bostonians got flair
By Ivana Martini
Sunday, October 2, 2005

So I'm knocking back a few PBRs and petit fours with the gals in my Retired Mistresses of Fallen Dictators support group, when someone mentions that the Philippines may auction off Imelda's shoes. I just might pick up a pair of her evening pumps to use as windowboxes.

But it got me thinking: Why not flog a few fripperies of my own? My butler Peevish, who doubles as my wardrobe curator, put together a hefty catalog for Sotheby's. I wish I still had the gown I tried to wear to last year's Oscars. A visual feast of feathers, it looked best when windblown. Manolo, my beloved Pom, wore a fan mounted to his cummerbund, the better to create a constant zephyr for my frock. Alas, an inopportune itch kicked the motor into overdrive, and I was plucked clean within seconds.

Exhausted from all those hours working in my closet/warehouse, I did some restorative moseying around New York and Santa Monica.

Let me dip my Oreo in this Milk Punch and I'll unburden myself:

J-LONG: While the fabulous Jennifer Lopez looks stunning head-on, the sideview of this gown she wore to the Macy's Passport HIV/AIDS fund-raiser in Santa Monica reveals a beaut of a bustle. How to know when it's OK to wear a train? If you're not in a church, with a bouquet, surrounded by relatives - it's not the best look.

STAND BACK: One should hang on to good friends, family recipes for party punch, and of course, all one's engagement rings. But yesteryear's Goth/Hippie Fabulous wardrobe? Best used for hamster bedding. Stevie Nicks, this means you. And to think, when you wore this in New York, you were thisclose to Saks.

MOD SQUAD: Laura Agnew looks smashing, and then some, in this fantabulous ensemble at the Massachusetts Children's Trust Fund Benefit at the Park Plaza. I love the boots, I adore the top, I may steal the hat.

TOP TRIO: Ruth Pointer, of Pointer Sisters fame, looks stunning in simple jeans and jacket; Lovely Gilda Baker sports a spirited fabric festival of fur bits and scarf over jacket, and winsome Elizabeth Smith completes the trio at the Park Plaza in Boho chic skirt and jacket, with fierce Xena, Warrior Princess belt.

narrowminded comment...

although, I gotta say, with as much mula as she has, it is beyond me why she has only worn 3 different outfits in the past 5 years.. she is Stevie Nicks, she should have TONS of different clothes, with different designs, colors, textures, etc..

I totally agree

Now, Brian, I have to say, I totally agree with you on this point. I loved the 80s concerts, especially RAL tour, because you never "knew" what she was going to yank out of the closet and toss on...some wild outfits on that tour, I loved it! The Dance outfit, totally YAWN and overworn. I know she loves black, but she looks so great in COLOURS! RAL had a lot of red additions, shawls, rhinestone jewelry, etc. I know this beautiful woman has TONS of clothes, old and new, and if I were her, you would never be able to predict what I was going to wear for what song...Yes, some have "standard" capes or shawls that "go with the song"...like "Stand Back", "GDW", etc...but get that darn seamstress to make VARIATIONS on a theme! DIFFERENT golden sparkly shawls, DIFFERENT capes with varied sizes/coloured circles, etc... That is what I do, and I wouldn't dream of doing two shows in two evenings wearing the same things for each night...much less MONTHS of touring like she does, that is a wardrobe WELCOME for lots of SURPRISES!
Maybe she just likes to "play it safe" now, and not risk any criticism (*like she won't get any from SOME people no matter how she looks*). Ah, I miss the 80s tours...was too young for the 70s ones, but bet they ROCKED too..

See, this is exactly what I hate about the fashion pundits....in one corner, you've got Stevie's name being used to describe what's IN this year. In the other corner, you've got beeyotch's like this Ivana Martini chick saying it's OUT.

Have you noticed how schlumpy most of these designers appear? Especially the women! Oy vay! Hair a mess, NO makeup, ever. And THESE are the people dictating fashion? Puhleeeez!

The outfits at least the top portions, I don't think I've ever seen here wear them before or since The Dance... There were two seperate top parts right... The dripping sleeve one I don't think she's worn it again since filming The Dance. Just one instance that comes to mind.

It's not her style I have a problem with, it's the lack of variation (which has already been mentioned). A lot of entertainers rarely where the same outfit twice and even if there is a tour they mix it up a bit. I love our girl but surprise us and break out something new for a change! A new stylist is in her cards.

She seems to favor that top with the sleeves that go to her elbow. Remember how in 2001 that top followed her everywhere?

Wonder what prompted her to bust out the plat boots again on TV last week. Did her neuralgic foot condition clear up?

The Dance outfit

She wore what appeared to be the tiny sparkles on a jacket and black skirt for what seemed like forever after the Dance concert...minor differences, perhaps you are right, they were different, but if I cannot just look at it and say "wow that is different"....it's "all the same...all the same" to me...:)

She did wear colors on the Dance tour though. She came out in the deep burgandy corset top and skirt. I thought that was gorgeous. Her Dance clothes were much more varied than the past two big tours. TISL was terrible. SYW got better the second half...but still not enough variation. Either way, she isnt going to change. She feels comfortable in her uniform and nothing will change that. I am curious to see what she wears next summer. Please dont say Lindsey will be dictating her clothes and they will be matronly. Stevie was matronly on the TISL tour as well, so that argument doesnt have any merit. I predict the same Gold Dust tour outfit for the Aussie shows.

I was in a couple of trendy clothing stores yesterday, and everything looked like Stevie circa 1976.

Even though fashion rules are a lot more loose than they were a few decades ago (regarding skirt length, and tailoring) so that the industry seems to be encouraging personal expression, they really still encourage self-doubt. Someone who has chosen a style, and only adds pieces to the collection is threatening - they would rather see radical shifts in wardrobe, because you sell more clothes that way, and you need experts to help you decide who the "new you" will be. (/rant)

Also, I think it is still a pervasive idea that women over 40 should cut their hair short, and start wearing monochromatic sweater sets.
