Hi,

I was wondering if anyone would like to discuss the following answer from Keith Olsen's Q&A. Actually, I'm going to quote the question and answer (if that's okay).

quote:
Hi Keith. Thanks so much for doing this. My question is, what do you think of Lindsey as a producer? I know he only produces his own stuff, but he has a very unique sound as far as what he does with his voice, instruments, etc. I am a major fan of Lindsey and his solo work (I'm SO anxious to hear his new album) so I'm curious as to what you think. Thanks! (Sonia, Boston, Massachusetts, USA)

There has to be separation between artist and producer to be able to be objective. I would think that if Lindsey would have worked closely with a top name producer, than the "what if's" would have been minimized and projects would have been done sooner.

I'd like to get some feedback from everyone about this. I just thought it was an interesting observation. I remember Lindsey saying in one of his technical interviews that he tends to get bogged down in the little details and that Richard Dashut helps him to cut through all of that. In other words, he helps him to see the big picture. I don't have the exact quote, but I'm sure someone will come up with it at some point during this discussion.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that Lindsey isn't totally alone when it comes to producing his own work. So, how can he lose his objectivity?

Well, it's interesting...because I think Richard is still, first and foremost, a friend...and maybe not quite as objective as one would imagine. And, perhaps, as in a good many friendships--one person has a "lead" role and the other is a support. So, Lindsey may still be very much in control of the work--too much so, maybe.

We don't really know what is happening but I do think that he might need someone to just come in and say..."this is fine...you know how you are and you'll probably never be satisfied completely, but this is great and we're using it. End of discussion."

Cause, you know, it's almost a painful joke that's not funny anymore...waiting for this cd. Will I still buy it? Sure...I'll be there with bells on the day it comes out. But, the waiting has been torture and the missed opportunities have been a downright crime. If that cd had come out within 6 months of the Dance tour being over, that cd would have probably received very good press, good airplay, etc. Now...there's a good chance of the old, "Lindsey who?" when it comes out. Which is a shame...it really is.

That may be true on Law & Order and OOTC, but what about Go Insane? Richard didn't help him produce that album and I doubt that he had a special friendship with Gordon Fordyce (a top name producer). I mean, I can see that Lindsey probably had the lead role in producing, but he still has to take guidance from his partner. I also don't see Richard as the type who would let friendship get in the way of his professional opinion. I'm probably wrong in that view, but I just wanted to share.

Besides, his objectivity couldn't have been way off in the final product. For instance, OOTC had excellent reviews by the critics. The fans just didn't know it was out there. I still think that marketing has always been a weak area and is probably to blame for poor sales.

Probably...but that's Lindsey. I think as fans, we probably tend to expect that anyway. He might actually surprise us this time http://theledge.hypermart.net/ubb/wink.gif

Oh, I didn't mean it in the way of the actual production...well, I did, but I didn't;-)

What I meant, and what I think Keith might have meant is that Lindsey gets so involved with absolutely the most minute details, that everything might come to a grinding halt until he feels it's "perfect" and then...he might change his mind again. And, I don't think Richard "lays down the law," and tells him "enough is enough," which is probably what Keith was referring to (I think he's the perfect support for the actual music, though). It's not that the music, or the completed cd suffers at all...because it probably doesn't. I mean, OOTC took a long time, too and, to me, it is one of my most favorite cd's EVER. But, it's just...if he was happy with it 3 years ago (which he mentioned in almost every interview he did during the Dance)...and it was 90% done...it's taken another 3 years to do 10%? I doubt it. So...it's really the timing I was questioning and the fact that he kind of shoots himself in his own foot when it comes to things like this. His devoted fans will always find his work, that's true...but, he closes himself off to a potential audience who will never know how good he is if he doesn't get his work out there...and, as an artist, I can't imagine it's all that stimulating to be working on the same material for nearly a decade. Get the stuff out there and begin something new and exciting for him--and, ultimately, for us.

The marketing will, probably, always stink...but, it would have been better coming right off the Dance, and--while the delay could very well be his record company now, I don't think it was back then. Because, from a business sense, I would imagine that they would have loved to capitalize on the success of the Dance with new Lindsey material at that point.

But, that leads to another frustrating thing (I've been thinking about this whole thing a lot this week!)...we don't KNOW anything about Lindsey's career, or the delay in anything. If you go to the Nicks Fix...you get updates once in awhile about where Stevie is with her new cd...but, we don't have a place to find out anything about Lindsey's stuff, and his management is good for nothing, IMO. But, it is a frustrating, interesting topic and I just wish the cd would be out so we could focus on the music instead of the business.

Well, when you put it that way, I can totally see where you are coming from http://theledge.hypermart.net/ubb/smile.gif Especially the fact that Lindsey is such a perfectionist and has scrapped whole albums for whatever reason...which is probably his choice and not the record company.

Agreed. It would have been perfect timing on releasing a solo album. From what we've seen from The Dance performance, he had every intention of doing this. I wonder if agreeing to tour with FM put him way off schedule.

We certainly don't get that kind of information and definately not from Reprise nor his management company. There may be a reason for that, but I guess we won't know until Lindsey releases the album and does some interviews. I'm really hoping that this is the month that it will happen. At least we know it will happen this year...or I think we do http://theledge.hypermart.net/ubb/wink.gif
