Like or Dislike: Gate and Garden
The lyrics? Don't make much sense.
The music? Is nothing that special. The chorus? Is pretty repetitive. Despite all of this, I still adore Gate & Garden. Everything somehow fits & makes it great. And the vocals? Sheebus. Just incredible. The harmonies are gorgeous & Stevie has great control here (that goes for pretty much all of TWH album, now that I think about it.) The way she sings these lines get me every time: "It's just a game...that...we...play Someone steals it... Someone...steals it away Scares you to death You don't give in to yourself You give in to your friends Don't send an answer How many times...have you said" Live...would I have liked this live. Yes, I think so. Then or now. I think she could still do it justice. Well, maybe not that ending "do IIII LLLLlllOOooOOoovvVVvve youuuuuuu" but the rest would be good. :) |
I have always liked this song. I think it is an acquired taste though.

I dont really care for it much. Dont hate it though either. Boy, I'd make a great politician with that opinion huh?

Ugh, where do I start? The song personifies everything I dislike about The Wild Heart... :distress:
But I don't wanna be a hater so I'll leave it at that. |

I'll be a hater
I think this song is awful and it ended my longtime streak of loving everything Stevie did.
I find the lyrics to be very subpar. "To the red rose grows the passion". Ugh. The ending is too long and repetitive. I feel there surely must have been some other song that could have replaced it. |
"Gate And Garden" has something going for it. I don't know, some sort of atmosphere... Great beginning.
The ending goes nowhere however and pretty much kills the song, making it the album's weakest link. I think "Gate And Garden" should have been relegated to a b-side status and "Garbo" should have replaced it on the album. |

 I love it. There are only two Wild Heart songs that I dislike and this ain't one of them; it's actually one of my favorites on the album. Like "Sable On Blonde," it's so very Stevie Nicks. Silly, meandering, verbose, lovely, and fun. It's got a slightly ethereal vibe to it and her voice is truly at it's peak. I don't care how inane "There is a gate/It can be guarded/Well, it is not heaven/It has a garden" is, because it's sung so beautifully. Great tune. |

I really like this song. Sure the lyrics don't seem to make a whole lotta sense but like Diss said that's Stevie. I love the vocals and harmonies. It just sounds so pretty.
|
Eh. Two stars out of five. Nothing special. The vocals are good tho, so that's it's redeeming quality.
|
It took a while but the song grew on me. I like it. Speaking of Gate and Garden, I hope Hillary is doing well in Louisiana.

I enjoy it. Never skip it when it comes on. Not a top ten favorite or anything. That is all.
|
I love it. The harmonies and vocals are amazing.

*cough, cough, barf*
Nope. This one is even vaguer in my mind than....uh...oh, Sable on Blond was! It just drifts along, no dynamics. Blergh. Although, in it's favor, I do like the notes better than the SOB notes. As we would say in my fam, "it's wispy/drifty". |
