Search for Newton-John's boyfriend
Man last seen boarding a fishing vessel in California

CNN) -- U.S. authorities are investigating the mysterious disappearance of the longtime boyfriend of singer Olivia Newton-John, the Australian Associated Press reports.

Patrick Kim McDermott, who has been in a nine-year relationship with the Australian singer, failed to return from an overnight fishing trip off the Californian coast.

The 48-year-old McDermott boarded a fishing vessel on June 30 at a port south of Los Angeles, but failed to return when the boat docked 24 hours later.

He was reported as a missing person to the U.S. Coast Guard by his family on July 11.

The Coast Guard is not ruling out the possibility of foul play but concede they have few leads.

"It's a really strange one," Coast Guard investigator Dennis Nebrich told AAP.

"Each time you think you know what's going on, it doesn't go that way."

"It was a boat where you pay your money, you go overnight," Nebrich said, according to AAP.

McDermott's family first became concerned for his whereabouts on July 6 when he did not turn up to a family gathering.

They then searched for his car which was found in the marina car park and his backpack, fishing rod and tackle box were still on the boat when it returned to shore.

Newton-John, 56, shot to fame in the 1970s as a middle-of-the road artist but really cemented her place in the pop pantheon with her appearance as "Sandy" in the 1978 movie "Grease," playing opposite John Travolta.

McDermott's link to Newton-John was made public by the police on Sunday in a bid to generate media exposure that in turn could unearth new leads.

This is really strange...considering it took 10 days for them to announce the disappearance. Very, very sad, but strange. Considering all the publicity about the different people that have "gone missing" over the last few months, I'm surprised it took the media this long to catch wind of it.

This is such strange and terrible news! So many unanswered questions.

I have tickets to see Olivia in concert on November 12th.

She has just one bad thing after another - bankruptcy, breast cancer and now this. :(

I don't understand, when they say this: "It was a boat where you pay your money, you go overnight," Nebrich said, according to AAP."
Does that mean a big boat with lots of people? I mean, he brought fishing stuff, so....uh the article doesn't mention other people being on the boat, or anything...I don't get that part.. No one saw anything? Was he alone? etc.

I was just thinking that. I sincerely hope they find him, for his sake and hers.

Um, does everyone else understand exactly how the boat was, and I'm just dense? Does anyone else wonder "how many people were on the boat? Did no one see anything? Was he by himself on the boat?"
Please, enlighten me if I need it...

Oh my God, I can't imagine what a horrible feeling she must have. I wouldn't wish it on anybody.

No, I don't. That article was horribly written because it is missing so much important info. For example, they do not mention when the trip was. Just that the family first became concerned on the 6th. Also, no, I don't know what kind of boat it was, that part was also vague. There is probably much more info out there if you check via Google.

Investigators for the US Coast Guard maintain that McDermott was last seen at sea aboard the seven-metre fishing vessel Freedom, hired by a group of 23 anglers.

here is some more about it~ i saw this on the TODAY show also, some, just a few think he may faked his own death  saying they saw him get off the boat when it docked, but others say no way~ this is so sad, i love the movie "grease" & "xanadu", i wish olivia all the best~

I just heard on the news that he owed over $30,000.00 in child support. Maybe he did fake is own death or something.
