She Devil
I first saw this movie when it came out in 1989 with Roseanne, Ed Begley Jr and Meryl Streep. I thought it was one of the funniest movies I'd seen. I've probably seen it like 10 times, and it still makes me laugh, but almost all of my friends think it's like the worst movie ever made. I found it funny because everyone was sort of making fun of themselves in it. Am I nuts?

I think it's hysterical, but the book "The Life and Loves of A She-Devil" literally had me gasping for air. I'm not a Fay Weldon fan, but crikey, that book is one of the funniest things I've ever read in my life. The movie is only marginally faithful to it, which is a shame because the book is so over-the-top and outrageous. In the book, Ruth has plastic surgery for years in order to look like Mary Fisher. She is one truly evil and twisted bitch that you love. I highly recommend it.
The BBC made a miniseries on it back in the eighties that is supposedly very faithful to the book, but it's not on video, unfortunately. |
I loved this movie when I was a kid! I'll still sit and watch it if I happen to catch a repeat of it. Meryl Streep is fantastic in it! I wish she'd do more comedy. I loved her in this and Death Becomes Her.

The maid Uta and the Butler Garcia are hilarious too

Meryl Streep is divine in this movie. I love it when she slaps the daughter.

Oh for a minute I thought the title was referring to Amarosa, or Hillary Rodham, or Grace Slick, or...ooops...better quit while I'm ahead.

I love She Devil, it's one of those movies I can watch over and over again and never get tired of it. Roseanne rocks, I'd say she's definitly the original Desperate Housewife!
