Madonna breaks bones in riding accident

Singer suffers cracked ribs, broken collarbone, broken hand

NEW YORK (AP) -- Madonna's 47th birthday celebration was marred when she suffered several broken bones in a horse riding accident at her country home outside London, her publicist told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The superstar was hospitalized with three cracked ribs, a broken collarbone and a broken hand, according to Liz Rosenberg, her spokeswoman based in New York.

The accident occurred Tuesday at Ashcombe house, her estate outside of London.

Madonna and an assistant were riding horses, when Madonna, on a new horse she wasn't accustomed to riding, took a tumble. Her children, Rocco and Lourdes, were at the home but were not with their mother at the time, Rosenberg said.

"The whole family was out in the country, celebrating her birthday," Rosenberg said.

Her husband, director Guy Ritchie, took Madonna to an undisclosed hospital, where she was treated. Rosenberg said the entertainer was expected to be released later in the evening.

That sucks :( . I hope she makes a speedy recovery...

I can't wait to hear her new song about this accident on her new album.

I tried to ride a horse, I tried to hold on strong
I tried to stay on top, I tried to be the best
I guess I did it wrong, That's why I wrote this song
This type of new horse - Is it for me?
This type of hospital care - Is it for free?

So, I went on the TV, looking for sympathy
A little company - That only Oprah could provide
It's more easily said, tabloids always been the same
This type of new horse is not for me
This type of hospital care is not for free

F*ck it...f*ck it...f*ck it!

Best wishes to her, though. I hope she's okay and recovers quickly.

She's damn lucky it wasn't worse than it is. Poor girl ~ sucks to spend your birthday in the hospital.

BTFLCHLD 08-16-2005 01:28 PM

I reckon she'll cope. Not long ago a girl fell off her horse near to where I live, and it kicked her in the head as she fell. She died and very few people got to hear about it, so forgive me if Madonna doesn't get my full sympathy

Good Lord - because some other person did not get full press and Madonna did you have less sympathy for Madonna as a human being - that is a little harsh

So bretonbanquet: did you have a horse kick you in the head recently to say something like that! I mean really I think breaking 3 ribs a collar bone and a hand sucks enough. Do you have any idea how many ppl get hurt in riding and you never hear about it, it doesn't make me any less sympathetic towards those that you do hear about. And it's probably a good thing that this gets publicized I've seen far to many little kids on horses they shouldn't be riding, so maybe ppl will wake up a little when they realize a grown-person can have trouble with a horse as well.

Happy Birthday, Madge.

Get Well soon so your fans can spend thousands of dollars for your concert tickets.

that's horrible and I agree it could have been much much worse. although I'm not a HUGE Madonna fan, I wouldn't wish anything like that on anyone...think about poor Christopher Reeves. Much love to her and hope she gets well soon. A Madonna concert is still on my list of things to do...

As well it should be! She's fabulous in concert. Hopefully this incident doesn't push back the (alleged) spring tour next year...

Who said anything about having sympathy for her as a human being? Does she need it as a human being? I have little sympathy for her accident, that's different. It's a hardly a major injury and she'll get every single scrap of care she wants - my sympathy tends to go to those more deserving. It's not like she needs, or even wants, my sympathy.

It is more like sympathy that she or any other human being is in pain, etc. But, to each their own.

I appear to have touched a nerve :wavey: I have a good idea about riding injuries having had plenty of my own at the hands of my bad-tempered thoroughbred. I agree about kids who shouldn't be riding getting put on horses they can't control, and I have sympathy for them in the event of injury. However, I stand by my lack of feeling for Madonna's problems since I suspect she bit off more than she could chew and paid the price. There's a current impression of her here that she's an English Countrywoman wannabe, who's just bought her way into what she perceives to be a 'normal' upper-class English way of life. Horses, shooting, country estates and enormous amounts of cash - it's just a sad dreamworld, traditionally populated by out-of-touch English aristocrats. For someone from the other side of the world from an ordinary background to decide to buy that way of life is laughable - she's more out-of-touch than the home-grown aristos. It makes our class system the joke that it is. I guess my prejudice has shone through here and I don't necessarily expect you guys to understand it... anyway I'll reserve my sympathy regarding riding accidents for the likes of Christopher Reeve.
