Lindsey Guitar Playing Thread 2
As the other Lindsey Guitar Playing thread has become so big, I thought I would post an opinion that has been brewing in me for some months and sparked again by some comments in the most recent guitar playing thread.
Lindsey's main contribution has always been as a producer, arranger, visonary, for Fleetwood Mac. He has stated repeatedly that his guitar playing was always dictated by what the song needed. It was part of the song, not the dominant overwhelming force. Sometimes layers, upon subtle layers until all these unique little part coalesced into one great piece of song craft. Although I think Say You Will is a good album with some great songs on it, I believe at points Lindsey lost sight of his own mantra and let his guitar playing overwhelm some songs. It was if he was out to prove I am a great lead guitarist/soloist. I hear it particularly on Come and Murrow. Come which is a fun live piece, does not work for me as an album cut. To much noise gated guitar, and repetetive power chords. Murrow which has great potential is too much of slightly reworked screaming guitar pieces from his live show. Even Say Goodbye and Red Rover become to obsessive in the finger picking and fail to build to their potential. To me Miranda is far more interesting. He takes the finger picking style of Big Love. The underpinning acoustic guitar riff is the most similiar thing to the live version of Big Love he does on Say You Will and then builds a Fleewtood Mac song around it. A classic fall in John McVie bass part and Mick's rolling percussion, along with a Tele "Bee-Sting" Solo. It is that kind of song creation that is what makes Lindsey great. Just my opinion. Anyone else hear the same kind of thing? |
Of course. He is a pompous, egotistical maniac who loves to show off what he can do in the studio to make him sound like he has much more talent than his live performances illustrate. But then other times, he wisely lays low and actually adds only what the song needs. He just wouldn't be Lindsey if he stopped throwing in completely unecessary fourteen minutes solos.

Your points are valid...but you have to remember...Christine McVie is out of the band now. The lack of her vocal as well as instrument of choice leaves more breathing room for Lindsey and John as "string" players. I think Come has a great guitar solo at the end...and as a guitar player myself I can really appreciate that. There are plenty of other cuts on Say You Will to tickle the "non guitar solo fan" 's fancy. If all the songs were the same they'd be boring. |

:D :D |
 Yeah, well... You never heard Steve Vai or Joe Satriani I guess... I'm not talking about the fingerpicking, just the "look what I can do"-thing. (nothing against those two, I like 'em alot, but it's all about technique) Or go watch Zakk Wylde, he plays a 20 minute acoustic solo, during which the crowd leaves one by one, that's beter huh ? And, I hope you realise that he doesn't play a Tele these days...
And I've said it before: John is one the best bassists of the world, 'cause, and Lindsey said it himself somewhere, "you don't tell John what to play". |
And, I hope you realise that he doesn't play a Tele these days...
Jr: He plays a lot of Tele. Most of his studio electric work is done with strats and teles.....The turner gets very little studio work. The only obvious place I hear it on Say You Will is on the title track. |

Hm, guess you don't know how versatile that guitar is ;) anyone here that can back me up and say that he does use his model 1 the most for studiowork ? and when it's not true, you can tell me also. But I need proof :p |
It's true. The model one is used pretty much "on the road." Lindsey plays Strats for most of his solos in the studio. He has stated this in several guitar mags in the past. Proof? Just watch Destiny Rules. You don't see the Turner 1 in one single instance.

Allright, thank you very much  I remember now that I saw a picture of him in London, I believe it was at earl's court, during the syw tour. He was playing an all white strat and I think it was during gyow, 'cause he was swinging it :) . Furthermore, from this day on, I consider Ed Roman as a liar, 'cause he makes people believe that LB only uses his model 1's! (you can read it on www.edromanguitars.com). Now, I have only one other question, 'cause destiny rules is hard to find here: Does he use his model 1 on just one track on syw ? And I must apologise to John Run! |
Yep
Lindsey used a strat for those London shows because he destroyed one of his Model 1's onstage...it was Saturday, November 29th, 2003. The one night we didn't have front row (ARG!!!) and he completely destroys his M1!!!!! We all about had a heart attack that night. LOL

He DESTROYED one ? OMG, talking 'bout getting caught up in something... that guitar sure went his own way  Oh well, he doesn't have to pay for them :) LOL Thanks btw wondergirl! |
Lol
He totally pulled a Pete Townsend. That sucker was jacked UP! It broke into pieces.

I see... I think I read on the website of Rick Turner/Renaissance guitars that they were working with LB on some sort of "special stage guitar" or something like that, so that's why  and he left the amps alone ? ;) |

Actually he uses the Strat on "Tusk" not on GYOW. I think you misunderstood Ed Roman's site too...some of those guitars have been used by Lindsey, yes. But Rick Turner makes the Model 1's specifically for Lindsey and gives them to him. Lindsey doesn't have to "go thru" Ed Roman to get a Turner 1 or anything like that. I dont believe Lindsey plays the Turner on any of the tracks on Say You Will........except possibly "Say You Will" and "Peacekeeper." |
