Local man's Stevie Nicks memorabilia on display

William Dean stands next to a display of Fleetwood Mac superstar
Stevie Nicks memorabilia at the Tifton-Tift County Public Library in
Tifton on Thursday.

Dusty Vassey/The Tifton Gazette

TIFTON — Chokers, leg warmers and a chiffon dress are not what you
would expect a man to collect. But for William Dean, those items are
worth collecting because they belonged to the "Queen of Rock."

For nearly three decades, Dean has been collecting memorabilia of
Stevie Nicks, the rock n' roll singer who became famous as a solo act
and with the band Fleetwood Mac in the 1970s and 1980s. Along with
his wife Tammy and daughter Amanda, Dean has compiled an extensive
collection of photographs, albums, clothing and jewelry, much of it
signed by the artist. The memorabilia has been on display at the
Tifton-Tift County Public Library throughout July and will be on
display until Sunday.

"My wife liked Fleetwood Mac, but I always liked Stevie Nicks," said
Dean. "There'll be a lot more singers that sell a lot more records
and this and that but sort of like Elvis was the King of Rock, she
was the Queen of Rock. Ain't nobody gonna beat that."

As for selling records, Nicks had little trouble selling her songs to
the public. Dean said she sold more than 100 million albums as a solo
artist and with Fleetwood Mac. He said the Fleetwood Mac
album "Rumours" was the highest-selling album of all time until
Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

"She's got a pretty good track record," the fan said.

Dean's passion for collecting memorabilia associated with Nicks stems
from his appreciation for her.

"I liked her as a singer and the more I read about her and stuff like
that the more I liked her as a person," Dean said.

He said that the artist has performed in a multitude of charity
events and rose from modest beginnings to international stardom.

The most valuable items he owns are clothing, including a jacket worn
by Nicks during her "Enchanted" tour, which he said was a one of a
kind. His collection also includes leg warmers, chokers, a chiffon
dress and a blue crystal ring worn by the singer. He also owns a
tambourine signed by the artist. In some of the pictures he owns, she
is wearing some of the items such as the ring.

Dean assembled his collection through a variety of means, including
auctions and using the e-Bay Web site. He warned other collectors to
be careful using online auctions because of fraudulent memorabilia.
He suggested ensuring that each item has a certificate of
authenticity and a money-back guarantee.

Some of his items were found through chance encounters.

"It's like anything else collecting stuff," Dean said. "You can run
into people who don't know what they've got."

Overall, it's the art of collecting that makes the hobby worthwhile
to Dean.

"The biggest thing I get out of it is the research," he said.

He said he has learned many things through his search for more
memorabilia. However, the collection also allows him to get a little
closer to the artist he idolizes.

"It's one thing to see her on a concert on TV and it's another thing
to reach over and pick her necklace up," he said.

Despite collecting Nicks memorabilia since the late 1970s, Dean has
never seen the singer live in concert.
However, his daughter has an
incurable disease and they have been in contact with the Make A Wish
Foundation. Amanda Dean told them that she would like to meet Nicks.

"I may meet her yet," said William Dean.

An avid collector since his youth, Dean has collected bugs, rocks and
all sorts of other things. He and his family also have an extensive
collection of Elvis memorabilia and Star Wars items. The Elvis
collection will be on display in the library in September.

In August, the library will display an exhibit commemorating Tift
County's centennial.

That struck me as a bit of an odd statement to make.

Well, I'm not an avid collector like that guy, but I do love her dearly, and I've never been to a show.

DeeGeMe 08-01-2005 06:44 PM

Wow. Just wow. Here's hoping that his family does get to see Stevie.

As in, his daughter has to get an incurable disease for him to meet Stevie?!

I agree.

It does strike me as odd. But then I have never been able to see Steve because of where I live. Maybe its just about timing, location and money to him and his family? Still.....an odd thing to say.

I agree.

Yup. It came across as quite selfish and classless.

Serendipity 08-01-2005 06:49 PM

Oh my. I just noticed that....he thinks that HE might get to meet Stevie because his child has an incurable disease? Priorites, people, priorites. Eww.

Shelfish??

Shelfish?? I'm a bit confused on that...
Not to cause a stir here ..but perhaps thats not how the man meant to come across..Perhaps he never had the oppurtinity to see Stevie due to ohh I dont know..Money..Location etc...sometimes life (Reality)gets in the way of us following our passions and dreams.Could it be due to perhaps having medical bills and doctors to visit for his daughter that he could not afford to attend concerts... Just a thought...
I do hope he does get to take his daughter to see her one day soon.
Blessings

Well, the guy laments never seeing her live, then talks about being in contact with the Make A Wish foundation for his sick daughter to meet Stevie, and then says "I may meet her yet." Just struck me as odd and a tad selfish on his part. It's being done for his daughter, not him, he shouldn't be talking about how he is going to meet her. It's tacky.

It's kind of like that episode of Family Guy in which Peter tells the Grant a Dream Foundation that Chris is dying, just so that the show Gumbel to Gumbel is brought back on the air.

I think so, too. I think I would've added something to make sure it didn't come across that way. "I may meet her yet, but what I really would love to see is my daughter getting to meet her. That would warm my heart." I mean, it doesn't have to be as cheesy as that, but if he had said something along those lines, we would've got the impression that he has his priorities straight.

My apolgies...you are right ,,after reading it a second time he does come off like that a bit..yes i have to agree.Make a Wish is for his daughter's wishes and perhaps she requested that to make her daddy happy..kinda sad really..You would think he would've said something about his Daughter's wish coming true not his.. I jumped the gun..I'm sorry

The way he worded it was very messed up imo. actually it's pretty sad.

SteveMacD 08-01-2005 07:44 PM

Yeah, this guy's a real a-hole. The nerve of him being excited about meeting Stevie through the Make A Wish Foundation because of his sick daughter's request to meet Stevie. I mean, it's not like he didn't sacrifice every opportunity to see Stevie because he made his daughter a higher priority. The butthole.
