Tom Petty to Make More Great Music

Sorry, I don't know the original source of this article. Someone posted it on another message board and I thought I'd share. (The thread on the other board was titled "Tom Petty Wants to Make More Bad Music." No accounting for taste, I tell ya.)

--------

Tom Petty Plans Music Mogul Future

The singer wants to return to the days when bands put out three albums a year.

Rocker Tom Petty is planning to set up his own independent record label because music executives take too long to release his albums.

The singer wants to return to the days when bands like the Beatles put out three albums a year.

He says, "I like the idea of having an independent label because it reminds me of the early days of rock 'n' roll when there were a lot of independent labels, and they were actually driven by people who liked music.

"They were music people, not lawyers or accountants or whatever you have running the music business now."

Petty kicks ass. If this means more Petty music more frequently, I'll be in heaven.

Thanks for posting, it made me smile.

I wonder what kind of deal he has with them though.
I mean, didn't Beck sign with Universal but had a clause where he could still put out albums on independent labels?
And of course Petty actually covered one of those independently released songs (Asshole) on She's The One. Be interesting to find out anyway.

Although the deal was just announced today, we've been getting plans ready for the last six weeks or so for an album in the fall from him.

I wonder if perhaps it'll be a case of his own imprint/label being distributed by Sanctuary, and by proxy, SonyBMG. "Independent" can mean so little these days.

Sounds likely, I'm surprised he hasn't done something like that before given his battles with record companies.

It's very cool he's signed to Sanctuary.
Will you get to meet him, do you think?

That kicks - maybe Stevie can go to his label.... :D

I hope not. I'll pee my pants. I would like to meet Benmont. But, I might hump his leg and get fired. Oops.

His new album comes out in the fall. The title refers to "Life on the Highway" or "Highway Songs" ... or something of the sort. The single is "Turn This Car Around."

I was just going to ask if maybe it would be his own imprint label, under Sanctuary.

Hayley, my love, any way you can convince the Powers That Be to woo Stevie over to Sanctuary? *bats eyelashes*

I can think of better places for her to be at this point in time... Sanctuary's imploding a bit. They might be sold this fall... they're laying off a ton of great staff...

But, yeah. I'll get on the horn and get right on it. ;)

He played "Turn this car around" when he was here in June....BTW, if you can see him this tour...DROP EVERYTHING AND GO!

Oh yeah! I have seen him in Chicago and it was amazing! It was defenetly the best concert I have ever been to (no offense to Fleetwood Mac)! Everyone was yelling his songs and his set was just amazing!

Eek! If that's the case, Stevie might as well just stay where she is.
Nothing would be worse than her recording an album that never gets released because she signed with an indy label that went under (such as what happened to the full-length domestic release for Cyndi Lauper's 'Shine').

Did you know that the track "It's Hard To Be Me" was written about Anna Nicole? I like to sing it in a breathy, slightly retarded Anna Nicole voice when the mood strikes.
