In the company of Vanity and Apollonia

Vanity and Apollonia were two proteges of Prince in the early eighties. I am struck by Stevie having been in the company of these women. As we know, Stevie and Prince met in 1983, and Prince held a romantic interest in her. This makes her sandwhiched in between Vanity and Apollina as the ladies in Prince's life.

Prince met Vanity in 1982, and decided to put her in the group he was creating, to be called "Hookers". And he wanted his new protege to be named "Vagina". In the end, however, her name was "Vanity", and the group "Vanity 6" after the number of breasts in the group. They were also lovers. Vanity was to be in Purple Rain, but she left Prince in 1983.

After Vanity quit, Prince discovered Apollonia in 1984. He put her in Purple Rain, and made her the new lead in the newly named Apollonia 6.

Prince is a big horndog and woman connoisseur; he has always been attracted to women for their uncommon beauty, with little care for their talent. These two women's assets were their blatant sexual energy. I love how Stevie broke the mold. She does not have a Playboy-type sexual look and demeanor, but she did have natural beauty, charm, and talent. She introduced Prince to a different kind of woman.

pretty much everything he does/did freaks me out. the mere thought of prince on stevie makes my stomach twitch...

she certainly did break the mold though. even when she was dressing in shorter skirts and those damned leotards, she was always covered up. her music isn't out-there sexual and i really can't see her being like that in person. what was it? actually, i'd rather not think about it.

I'm with you...the thought of Stevie with Prince stink all over her makes me kavetch. But Waddy grosses me out too so my inner shipper really can't handle much.

Stevie alluded to this general topis when she said that Prince's music was too sexual for her. So, I think that while she thought Prince was a great talent, which he unquestionably is, she did not want him on a musical basis. I also think that Prince essentially made those others (Sheena "Morning Train to Sugas Walls" Easton, Appolonia, etc. ) and Stevie was already a mega star then. So, that may have had something to do with it. I also think she and Prince were just friends, but who knows for sure.

I think Stevie mentioned that Prince had offered sex but she declined and also she was a much bigger star than he was when she called him up to play on Stand Back .he had only one top 10 hit by then "Little Red Corvette' .By the time he reached super stardom with Purple Rain they had already had their falling out over her reaction to seeing him pop Appollonia in the advanced screening of Purple Rain.

Well said, vermiciousknid. I have actually thought about this topic before, knowing that Prince and Stevie were hanging out together while he was concocting "Purple Rain" just from watching it, it made me compare all these different women that were famously linked to Prince in the 80's. I also agree on the fact that while the rest of these women were more known for looks and their whole image, Stevie was known for those also, while being known for her talent and charm.

I personally think that Vanity and Apollonia are two gorgeous specimen of women, but I also believe that Stevie is and was definately in the same category. It seems Prince was known for his taste in all these exotic looking women, while Stevie was the opposite with her blond hair and fair complection. It is just really funny and interesting to think about! So that brings up the question? What was it that drew him to Stevie? Everybody and their mama basically knows that Prince was called in for help for "Stand Back", but if it's true that he actually wanted to go out with her, then what was it about her that sparked his interest?

I would have loved to see what kind of things would come about if Prince and Stevie had collaborated on some music! They are both two of my top favorite music artists! From what I've heard, I always thought Stevie really liked Prince's music.

Are you serious? Stevie is/was HAWT! I don't think it mattered to him that she wasn't dark haired, etc. Stevie had quite the reputation as a sex-kitten and was on top of the heap at that time. She was a tiny wisp of a gal, had the long flowing hair, wore those clingy little Danskin body suits and see-thru chiffon skirts with tall boots... the guys would go CRAZY! and the girls would be like ... "sigh... I wish I looked like her." So couple that with her flirty, party girl personality and any guy is gonna fall all over themselves to get with her.
