Lord of the Rings favorite character

Hey I don't know how many of you in these forums are big Lord of the Rings fans...but those who are, I was curious to know who is your favorite character in the story/movies and why?

Personally I was always intrigued by the character of Saruman the White. He was such an enigmatic character, and at one time more powerful than Gandalf. I tend to be attracted to these characters that have the potential for greatness, yet are fundamentally flawed. In Saruman's case he lost hope in Men, and in that the defeat of Sauron was possible. His fear drove him to try to gain power in order to withstand his own destruction, and avoid becoming a slave to Sauron.

Whew...that was some DEEP-geek-talk right there. Anyone else care to share some i-dears?

I'm a major geek in the LOTR mafia. :woohoo:

If I had to choose one character as my fav, it would be Galadriel -Lady of Light. I'll spare everyone from a long boring post as to why. ;)

I also love:

Gandalf
Aragorn
Saruman
Faramir- In the books. Not that bastardized movie version.
Legolas

He was THE BOMB in the book. In the extended DVD - his character is more developed - but nowhere near to the extent of the development in the book

His character was slightly redeemed in the extended version, but I'll never forgive Peter Jackson for making him such an asshole in The Two Towers. BOO!

I know - but as much as I love the movie and think he did the best with what he had in the three movies (which could have been five  ) - I was HORRIFIED by no Tom Bombadil - not to mention no Silmarillion

Same here. I also would've loved if they had Glorfindel, Prince Imrahil, and Arwen's brothers. I know that was never going to happen though.

My favorite character is Tom Bombadil. I was sorry to see him deleted from those awful movies.

Some readers see Ol' Hey Come Derry Dol as the emerging adolescence of a young godhead. Others as a chthonian or daemonic force. Still others as Nature-Outside-Consciousness. But I see Tom in relation to Freud's essay on the uncanny: a 20th-century counterpart to J's Yahweh, a derangement of the senses & a signpost of the most supreme dramatic & situational irony -- because Tom represents the true theme of the work. In one of the chapters, someone asks "Who is Tom Bombadil?" & Goldberry answers, "He is" -- with its obvious parallel to Exodus, "I am that I am . . . I am hath sent me unto you."

Tom is outside the realm of the tale, beyond the boundaries of the will to power & the inclination to control that drives all beings, whether good or evil. He -- not Sauron -- is the all-seeing eye, the extratextual author.

Perhaps true in the sense that he is the oldest thing -- however, according to Gandalf, TB is mostly unaware of that whereas Sauron is/was very aware that the one ring could control all but TB and that, perhaps, TB would be unaware of that, etc. I hope that made sense

Strand: :xoxo: :xoxo: :xoxo: :xoxo:

I would type about how PISSED I was that he got cut out of the movies, but... well, I'm still too pissed. And to think I even made up a melody for the little song he sings as he's skipping through the forest saving Hobbits from man-eating trees...

Bombadil-love also to Creeping Death and David!!!!! :xoxo: :xoxo: :xoxo:

I was indifferent about leaving out Tom. He's not important to the story, and he really does nothing for me in the books, either.

For those wishing Imrahil was included, I do believe he's in the film - he's just not named. In Minas Tirith there is a blonde captain wearing a dark blue cape ( I believe)...and he has a few lines, mostly speaking to Denethor. I THINK that may be him.

Leaving Elrohir and Elladan out of the film (Arwen's brothers) was a point of major disappointment for me.

I'm kind of glad The Silmarillion hasn't been touched yet. I'm not sure it could be done justice.

Anyway, my favorite characters in the books...

Gandalf (the grey)
and Sam

I was also intrigued by Bombadil. Especially at the end of the series when Gandalf goes to speak with him and says they have "much to talk about." I wasn't however, bothered by his exclusion since he really is not essential to the progression of the story. I do think they could have at least mentioned, or made reference to him somehow for the fans' sake.

Me too. I remember reading The Hobbit when I was I kid and I was always fascinated by Gollum. I always wanted to know what happened to him, where was he.
