A letter from Stevie ONE.ORG

Found this on Nicksfix.... kinda goes with her comments she reportly made tonite...

Dear Friends,

I want you to know about an important campaign called ONE that I am supporting. The ONE Campaign asks each and every one of us to do just ONE thing in the fight against global AIDS and poverty. Whether it’s by going to the Live 8 concert, sending a letter to President Bush or just by signing the ONE declaration at ONE.org you can add your voice to the ONE million people in the USA who have already spoken up asking for change.

Did you know that every day 6,300 people die in Africa of AIDS? Dying from a preventable treatable disease and for lack of a 25 cent pill that can keep them alive! These statistics are staggering and yet as ONE we can let our world leaders know that this is unacceptable and ask them to change it now.

The ONE campaign asks all of us to do something that will make a real difference for people living in poverty: sign a letter to President Bush asking him to seize the best opportunity we’ve had in decades to actually end extreme poverty. The ONE letter asks the President to make three bold commitments at the G8 summit of world leaders on July 6th – foreign aid, debt relief and trade law reform. Please take a minute out of your day today to help us support this incredible wave of action.

You can sign the letter to President Bush by going to www.ONE.org.

Sincerely,

Stevie Nicks

SO who is gonna be sportin' a ONE bracelet at a concert?

This is a really interesting campaign. I already signed my name to the website and ordered the braclets a couple months ago. I think it's a great thing. It's nice to see Stevie support it. It's rare that she becomes politically active...openly at least.

I signed awhile ago also it does seem like a great thing.

Stevie is really suprising me lately i mean this is as political as she has ever been...right?

She didn't participate in LIVE AID back in the day or ever allowed her political views to be known. I realize this is more of a humanitarian organization but she really has never aligned herself publically with anything.

GO STEVIE!!

These are some great causes and I'm glad Stevie is taking them up.I just wonder what it would take for Bush to actually make the commitments to help end poverty and AIDS internationally..Maybe if he thought the money was going to kill some civilians and U.S soldiers in a third world country that might have some oil in it he'd support the cause.

WTG Stevie. I'm in! :)

I've heard about this campaign before, but now that I've actually taken the time to look into it, I'm so happy that Stevie Nicks has choosen this to be her first "cause". It seems like a viable solution to World Poverty and AIDS, and we all know that a solution, or at least the start to one, is desperately needed!

I was just looking at the World Vision American site...and I realised you have the THIRTY hour Famine...we have the FORTY hour Famine so we win  How popular is the famine in America because it is very high profile in Australia.

I do not see this as so much of a political thing as a charity because it would not matter who was the Pres. of the US - that person would be getting a letter. La Nicks had always supported charities like City of Hope, a Leukemia one, the Arizona Heart Institute, and many others. So, I am glad she is supporting this one.

They are great causes and I too am glad that Stevie is getting on board with this, but I agree that it is a humanitarian and charity issue rather than a politcal one. I don't want to get involved in a political discussion, I just wanted to share this information.

From Time Magazine:
http://www.time.com/time/press_relea...074094,00.html

GELDOF: America doesn’t have a lack of empathy, they just don’t know the issues as well. Actually, today I had to defend the Bush Administration in France again. They refuse to accept, because of their political ideology, that he has actually done more than any American President for Africa. But it’s empirically so.

BONO: The most important and toughest nut is still President Bush. He feels he’s already doubled and tripled aid to Africa, which he has. But he started from far too low a place. He can stand there and say he paid at the office already. He shouldn’t, because he’ll be left out of the history books. But it’s hard for him because of the expense of the war and the debts. But I have a hunch that he will step forward with something. And it’ll take somebody like him ...

Information on what happened to the money in the first place:

Peace & Passion,
Patty

She was telling everyone about this at the concert last night... Then she dedicated "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You" to those people.

Right you are. Stevie supports causes she has a personal connection with through the people she loves and wants to honor.

So many of those nations & states are so rife with dictatorships & extreme corruption that they perpetuate their people's poverty, generation after generation.

debt relief is a nice, quaint idea, but it isn't going to improve life for anyone living in poverty in those countries throughout Africa, Indonesia & elsewhere. The change must be a political change from within, not a humanitarian or a political one from without.

In fact, debt relief is an agreement between the governing body of one state & the governing body of another. For Britain or the United States to agree to cancel the debt owed by the government of some Third World country, the lives of the people in the streets & slums, the barrios & bodegas, of those countries won't see any change in their own lives.

If the dictators aren't unjustly taxing their people in order to pay off international debt, they'll unjustly tax them for some other reason, & the cycle of corruption will continue.

I have to agree with David here. So many times good-intentioned people will try to do something that sounds good on paper, not realizing that their solution isn't going to effect the kind of change they expect. The circumstances in these situations are far from simple, and cannot be simply fixed with something like a debt cancellation.

Especially when multinationals backed by the western Countries can even get the situation worse making pacts and economic trades with those dictators they helped to get to the power to avoid left oriented governments. To cancel the debt can at least start to break this vicious circle and start to clean a bit our hands, no? There wouldn't be change if people are hopeless.
