I Am My Own PETA

At lunch today, a bird got into the enormous dining room at the school where we are shooting our show. Don't ask me how.

It was fluttering all around the place, freaked out. The place has 30' high glass windows, and I knew it didn't look good. A few people opened up doors, but to a scared bird, these aren't even visible. Of course, the poor thing flew into a window. It fell, then got up and started flying again. Back into the window it went. The second time it stayed down. People were making all kinds of racket, a group ran over there. Some stupid guys were laughing. I bolted over there, and a bunch of people were gathered around while this poor little bird lay on the ground. It was stunned and I thought it had a broken neck. People were afraid to pick it up.

I moved right in, scooped the little thing up and took it outside. I kept talking to it and held it in my hands next to my chest in the sun to keep it warm. I thought for sure it's neck was broken. But after a few minutes, it started to blink, and move a little bit. I kept petting it's head and neck, hoping it would move it's head. Finally, it sat up in my hand. By then about six or seven people had come out to see what was happening. The little guy stood up in my hand and I continued to pat it on the head and scratch it's back. Within another minute or two, the bird opened and closed it's beak a few times, shook it's little tail, and took off into the trees. I got a round of applause.

What a way to end my week.

Not posting to toot my own horn, just to show that some of us out in the world take care of little creatures when we can. And there are happy endings, even for a cynical puppy like me.

I think that is the coolest thing I've heard in a while.

Here's to Sparky - our "Maker of the Birds"...Stevie would be proud.

The story should end with: "And then I went in and beat the asses of the people who were laughing when the bird hit the window"

Sparky - Friend Of All Birds

Very cool! Funny--I recently had a similar experience!

About a month ago our neighbor across the street knocked on our door saying she just saw a bird fly into another neighbor's front window. She said she saw it fall, but it wasn't moving and she was worried about it. So my husband (friend to all animals) came out, picked up the bird and basically did everything Sparky did. Interesting because he did the same opening-beak thing Sparky described! And he too eventually was fine and flew off!

But you're right, Sparks! I often get involved if an animal is hurt (remember my Great Blue Heron story?). I'm always amazed at people who choose to do nothing when a few moments can make all the difference in the world.

Anyway here's a picture of my husband holding the bird during its recovery. I think it's a Northern Flicker.

Sparky - Friend Of All Birds

Very cool. :)

Unfortunately, where I live West Nile Virus is rampant and several dead birds that were found in my neighborhood have tested positive. So if I were to witness something like that here, I don't know that I would have stepped in. :distress:

EnchantedSLN 06-24-2005 07:16 PM

Thanks, Sparks. I needed to read that after having someone tell me an awful story about something they did to an animal that they actually thought was funny. People like you make up for the total f*ckheads. Cool story .

GypsySorcerer 06-24-2005 07:21 PM

Thanks for sharing your story. It's nice to read a positive one. :) :wavey:

Very good of you to do that  Glad you could help it out

awwwwwwwwwww....that's a pretty bird. Their beaks probably hit the window first, wouldn't you think? Then they have to check them when they wake up. If we could hear them, they'd probably be going "ow! damn! looks like it's okay, though."
