So You Wanna Be a Rock 'n roll Star

When I heard that they end with this, I was so psyched. I've loved it since the Byrds did it (how old am I? ) and I thought it would be the perfect ending--two true-blue major rock-n-rollers singing along with the crowd!!! At Mansfield, when they finished Leather and Lace, the lights didn't go up immediately, so I waited in great anticipation. I realize now that they couldn't do it because they were running late. Don didn't start til 8:15 or so for a posted 7:30 start. but what's the deal?
Dont' they sort of know how long the show is, and couldn't they have cut the opening act? I for one sure could have done with one or two fewer of her stuff to see Don and Stevie do SYWBARARS... :distress: So I thought the concert ended sort of with a thud....A couple of other people said the same thing.

What do you all think?

Martha :wavey:

I'm totally with you. I loved their version of this - great choice for their voices, and I sort of like when shows end on an up note. I'm hoping beyond all hope it resurfaces in Detroit. Has it actually been played beyond the first night? I can't remember. I agree - they know the length of the show. What's with starting late and chopping off the bottom??

For years many of us have been complaining that Stevie never ends with a rocker, how cool would it be if she did, etc.

So she finally does & now it's gone? It had better be back in the setlist by tomorrow, dammit!

hey Martha, i kinda agree.. i was a little disappointed about that... and in all honesty, they really COULD have done that song.. it's only like 2 min and 45 secs long... they couldn't stay on stage for another 3 minutes?? come on now..

I'll bet it is not a time issue, but that Stevie wasn't happy with it. It wouldn't be a Stevie tour without some dropped songs.

If it's a time issue, then surely a few minutes could be shaved from the instrumental solos preceding Stand Back and Edge of Seventeen.

Maybe DOn wanted to ax it. Who knows, but I say bring it back

The venue is indoors in Atlanta and in the middle of nowhere or at least not in a residential area. So, seemingly there are no time contraints - if that was indeed the problem

Also, as always, thanks for the boots!!!! :xoxo: :xoxo: :xoxo:

I'll be so mad if this song doesn't get played in Detroit. I think it's better to end the show on a rocker note, than a ballad too.

Oh geez...no, no more curfews dammit! ;) I saw them in Holmdel NJ last week, and they had to drop the encore....in Philly they ended with End of the Innocence and Desperado, and mine was the second show...and it was cut off because there was an 11pm curfew. I highly doubt Don's up for dropping any songs...he seemed a bit rushed during his set, and also, the lights didn't come up right away after So You Wanna Be A Rock'n'Roll Star, and from my vantage point I had a clear view of the place they walked off the stage into...and, with that, a clear view of an obviously agitated Don arguing with SOMEONE, presumably about not being able to do the encore, he kept pointing back out to the stage. LOL...I would not have wanted to be whatever employee he was yelling at! ;)

They really ought to drop the opener, because she's caused problems at a few shows now with time constraints...I've heard there may be a curfew at DTE as well, there better not be, because I don't want any more songs cut off! I'd love to see the encore if I could, but I'd be glad just to see this again. I adored it.

According to Taku they purposely got the opening act just for the outdoor shows, so that the "main acts" can come out a little later, when it's darker

Looks like they put it back in in Pittsburgh... :woohoo: Or maybe this is old news and it was back for Jones Beach?? If so, sorry...
I'm seeing them tomorrow night in Hershey, so psyched! :blob2:

I think "So You Wanna Be A Rock and Roll Star" is such an inspired choice for a closer. Such a slightly wry comment. And highly unusual for two songwriters to close with a cover song. The Byrds are a tremendous band.

Apparently there are many younger fans who, surprisingly, never heard this song. It's such a classic staple. Some quoted it as "DO you wanna be a rock and roll star."

To those who are totally unaware of The Byrds, I recommend you get educated and enlightened. They were a heavy influence on many subsequent bands/artists...including Tom Petty, who has, not surprisingly, performed this song a few times.

I always wished that Fleetwood Mac would, off the cuff, throw in a cover song occasionally. In many ways it pays homage to their influences. Plus, it's just something different, fun and unique to a show/tour. But of course we all know how strictly rigid the band is with regard to such manners.

Farmer's Daughter on the Dance Tour?

Some people still bitched at that closer. I loved it.
