Stolen Demos
As so many of you are fanatics (and I mean that in the nicest and most admiring way), perhaps someone could let me know which of the demos were stolen from Stevie, and which came from Modern Records (I believe they dumped a lot of stuff at some point).... help??
|
If they're demos, they were nicked. I don't think Modern has ever condoned any release of Stevie's demos.
|
That was my original thought, but then I heard that when Modern closed it's doors, it tossed/dumped/gave away a bunch of stuff, including Stevie's "unofficial recordings".
|
Modern nevercondoned the release of any demos, but I believe that when they shut down they sold off or gave away the contents of their warehouse? Or something like this? Didn't I read this somewhere not too long ago?
I have no clue which demos are the original stolen ones & which are the Modern warehouse ones, though. :sorry: |
I believe the "original" stolen demos were the ones that appeared around 79 or 80 and included Without You, Cathouse Blues etc..on Almanac. Others have dribbled out through the years..including songs that were recorded for possible use on TISL and leaked onto ebay.
The bigger question in my mind is who leaked Lindsey's entire album? Those demos leaked all at once, onto ebay..on cassette and were purchased and put up for free download. |

i am operating under the impression that Modern auctioned off everything and nothing was done to stop it. is it bill that owns all of those now? i may be getting mixed up...
anyways, there were only a few demos 'stolen' in the conventional sense. she said at 'storytellers' that someone literally came into her house, took the demos, copied them, and then came to put them back. i think it was only a handful of songs (some already listed). everything else, i tend to believe that a 'friend' of hers gets a tape and then sells it, but also that some are leaked intentionally. IMO it's like the A in the ABCs of creating a rabid and fervent fanbase: let them have all that they can handle, they'll buy what you put out anyways. |
As far as the Master Reels they were auctioned off from the Modern "warehouses" and apparently the option was given to Stevie and Co. to buy them as Modern owned the Masters, but they declined saying they already had copies... so the auction went ahead and the highest bidder won! Stevie and Co. either didn't realize what was there, or didn't think anyone would actually go through the trouble of baking the reels to be able to extract the audio from them. But they did. That's how I understand it..
The early demos.. don't know much about how they surfaced. |
Anyone circulating demos or bootlegs is a SCUMBAG!!!

If it makes her so furious, then she should look after her unreleased material better than she does. She was offered the masters and turned them down, so tough tacos. I won't be crying in my Wheaties over it, that's for damn sure. |
I prefer the term...
