Greetings Everyone!
May 11th Review
I arrived at my seat and realized that it was way over to the side of the stage so I was seeing Stevie from a profile. I was on the ladies’ side. The seat was good although would have preferred to be in the center.
As the lights were brought down, the musical sounds of the Bootliscious filled the room...
The show began with Enchanted, Stevie came out in her trademark black dress...
While Enchanted played there were images of Stevie on the screen behind the stage, they were blown up photos of her face and were very pretty. Next came Outside the Rain with a backdrop of rain which was also not very different from what we are already used to! During Dreams there were smoky images in the backdrop.
For Draggin’ My Heart Around the blue lamp made an appearance as the backdrop! It was a photograph of one side of the lamp from the inside. Later in the song Stevie was superimposed within the blue lamp, as you can see in my photo, which was actually very cool. Now the show is starting to get different!
When Rhiannon began we were introduced to a new piano intro.
Plunket’s hands were shown on the video screen and the intro was very dramatic and built up anticipation for Stevie to come back out from her costume change. She came out with her black Rhiannon top on. The images on the screen during the song were stunning. There were images (sketches and sculptures) of various women representing Rhiannon and an animation including unicorns. This was really neat and I was thrilled to see something new! Incidentally Stevie appeared really fit and thin for this show, she looked absolutely stunning.
Stevie introduced Sorcerer with a short story about how she wrote it when she and Lindsey first arrived in LA. She said, “You can make of these words what you will but – think back.” During this song the screen showed smoky images with gold melting through and later in the song an animated kaleidoscopic view. Stevie also made an appearance on the backdrop for this song, this effect was really cool!
Then Stevie made another costume change for Stand Back, she came out with a new SB cape which was long with layers of fringe and had silver sparkles, like small, evenly spaced diamonds.
The backdrop for this was a series of black squares in a grid and to the beat of the song certain squares would light up in rectangular patterns. It was very 80s retro. I would have liked to see bits of the actual video here though. Stevie rocked this song as always and blew us a kiss at the end. J She also did one of her trademark side kicks.
When Stevie began Landslide she explained that she always dedicates the song and tonight she would dedicate it to us. She said never in a million years did she imagine playing it in Las Vegas or anywhere at the time she wrote it. There was no video backdrop for this song, just strange, lacy, block-like shapes that came down from the ceiling.
Gold Dust Woman included a gold shawl, of course, which appeared to be new.
It was sheer and very sparkly. The backdrop consisted of swirls and various images of woman with golden liquid-like graphics and then twinkling gold graphics. Stevie ended this song differently just repeating “Shadow” at the end and hiding her face behind her hands. It was mysterious and cute.
Next, a real treat for the fans. Lori comes out for If Anyone Falls, Stevie called it
If Anyone Falls in Love.
Stevie had on a black bustier top for this song. Before it began columns dropped from the ceiling. The backdrop showed images from the IAF video, the ones where Stevie is dancing with the male ballet dancer and they are wearing all white. He dips her and then spins her away. They showed a 10 second or so clip of this over and over. Further into the song the background for the dancers became the sea. Stevie and the girls sang the chorus one time a-capella and that was very cool. This song gave me goosebumps from seeing the old video up there and hearing that song live for the first time!
Next Stevie introduced her band; Al Ortiz on bass, Scott Plunket on piano, Jimmy Paxon on drums, Machito Sanchez on percussion, Brett Tuggle (“sweet Brett”) on keyboards, guitar, etc, then her three birds of Rhiannon, Lori, Jana, and Sharon, and her fourth bird Carlos Rios. Lastly, the man who’s been with her since 1971, her angel, the leader of the pack, Mr. Waddy Wachtel.
After the band intro Lori exited the stage and the girls began Fall From Grace.
The backdrop was a daytime sky. It rocked like the Blockbuster awards but was nothing different. Then, Lori returns and How Still My Love begins.
I love this song and was thrilled that it was in this set. After “you go your way” Steve sang “Go on, GET OUT” in a sassy way with her hands on her hips moving side to side and then “because you don’t forget me”, it was really dramatic.
The backdrop for this song was a dark sky with twinkling stars, very romantic.
Toward the end of this song everyone began the trek down in front because we knew from Tuesday night that Edge of Seventeen was about to begin.
The guards decided to stop everyone in the row and behind from getting down to the stage! So we tried to sneak out the other side of my row and another security guy stopped us. Then, I sort of glared at the first guy and he waved me back and let me down!
That was cool. So we were able to approach the stage right under Lori’s mike and there was a chair there! So I stood on it which was awesome.
For Edge the white shawl jacket came out with a tuxedo jacket over it.
The white outfit was layers and layers of material all the way down to Stevie’s ankles. Waddy’s intro was extended and the backdrop was his part from the Sorcerer video. It really built up the song. Later in the song the backdrop was an animated hi-contrast dove in flight. At the end of the song Stevie did her greeting of the fans in front which was so exciting, as always!
Next the tuxedo jacket came off revealing all of that white outfit underneath and
I Need to Know began.
This is such a fun encore song and everyone was bouncing around to it. Stevie brought out the tambourine to rock out with to this one.
For the finale ... Stevie went off stage for another costume change.
She came out to begin Beauty and the Beast with her hair up and wearing a floor length velvet cape with a circular stand-up collar and sweetheart neckline.
The back of the cape had beautiful detailing. She came down in synch with the
Jean Cocteau Beauty and the Beast movie in the background, the original inspiration for this song. This knocked me out as with everyone else.!
I’ve not ever seen any footage from that film. It is so visually stunning and Stevie emoted this performance like I’ve never seen before, she acted it like a stage actress.
Vocally, she was truly within her right... vocals of that of an opera songstress, and all of her hand movements and facial expressions were very dramatic and moving.
I wished not for this night to ever end. When it did Stevie said to us “You are my beauties.” which was so incredibly sweet.
Being on the floor with all of us fans for that was a transcending experience. The experience, here upon this evening was a blessing... one to have felt fortunate to be there and was very grateful for every moment. Should Stevie decide to perform in Vegas again count me in!
Now... onward towards Calif tour dates for the Magick to continue...
... black moons in those eyes of hers made more sense to me...
she was dark at the top of the stairs and she called to me...
