Has anyone else caught the Merrill Lynch commercial that uses The Chain? I saw it just now on the Weather Channel. I'm not sure if it's new or been around for a while but this is the first time I've seen it.

omg....so, i'm not nuts after all?!?! i was in my bedroom and i could faintly hear the tv in the kitchen...i suddenly hear what i think is "the chain"...the part at the tail end of john's solo and where Lindsey's guitar comes in...i stop
for a second...there was narration over the music but i couldn't make it out so i ran into the kitchen. right as i got to the tv it was over. i figured it might have been something else that sounded similar to "the chain." and i also figured i would see the commercial again. so, thanks for clearing this up for me!

I just did the same thing! I was in the kitchen making dinner and I heard the music and went into the tv room and there is was!

I made me think of how Stevie has classified John's bass part as "the monsters are coming" and how they matched this part of the song up with the bull crashing though the glass. Too funny :laugh:

Over here in the UK, the BBC using The Bass riff/Guitar solo for the intro to Formula 1 was the greatest ever.

I was watching a British friend's dvd of some UK chat show (forget the host's name). The special guest was a car racer, so the house band played that segment of The Chain as a segue.. and then the host and guest chatted about the song a bit! Unexpected bonus.

Oh God, NO!!!!! I hate when bands that I love sell out and use their music in stupid commericals! :mad:

Me too! I heard "The Chain" twice on the '70s rock radio station today, tho. So I guess that's a good thing. Too bad I could only think of bulls when I heard it, but maybe that will pass. :laugh:

Anyone know how this came about? It's not just an instrumental mix, it has the vocals too at the end of the spot. Does this mean the band had to approve it? And since that's the only song all 5 take writing credit for, would the decision have to me unanimous???

See, I think it was more LB. I think this because the only other FM song I can think of that was used was his (GYOW in a car commercial).

He, along with the bamd, is credited with writing the song. Can he authorize its use without the other four. I guess it depends on their contract, which i presume none of us know.

Personally, I have no problem with it.

I believe the publisher is the one that licenses the song and approves along with the artist where it gets used. It's like ASCAP or BMI, one of the publishing companies that tracks it's use, where it's played... how much it's played etc. They collect fees for the songs performance in public, or it's use, and pay the artist their royalty fees based on that. Whom ever the song writers are, are the ones to collect royalty payments for it's use.

I think that's how it works.

It's not just a matter of Merrill Lynch calling up FM and asking for the use of the song. Plus the amount of seconds the song is played plays into the cash generated as well, like if they only play 10 or 15 seconds instead of 30 seconds, there's a different rate of payout to the artist.

Hmm. I always thought, though I could be mistaken, that the artist would have a say in whether or not they would choose to SELL OUT!! Argh. I groaned out loud when I saw this post.
