Australian Tsunami Aid

I am aware of what we are doing in Australia, but I am interested to know what efforts are taking place across the world.

Tonight we had an Australian first, a three hour telethon was shown in Australia on all three commercial television stations with personalities from each of the three presenting. In the three hours the telethon raised nearly $16 Million! It was a truly histric moment for Australia tonight.

What efforts have you country done?

It has nothing to do with boasting so much, I know this is our region we need to donate highly because it influences us directly, I am just interested to see what others are doing, wow it woulda been awesome to be at the Opera House tonight I was trying to organise a cricket trip to Melbourne to see the charity match on monday, that has already raised 2 Milllion in jsut ticket sales.

we had one of those telethons here thursday night. Raised 112 million. Not bad for a country with 16 million inhabitants I think. Though I feel tempted to donate to some other good cause, since this one gets plenty attention right now.

Thats amazing Mari, I think what it really shows is that in general how much humans care about each other.

I guess it hits us here more because this is our region. The easterly locations are our neighbours and occupy our news on a regular basis. Finally Howard has made some kind of recognition of where we actually belong and it's not across the Pacific nor does it have a monarch named Elizabeth.

And just to make Joe homesick, or Opera House sick:

YOU BONE HEAD  - I was not chastising the aid efforts of Australia - I was giving you hell for suggesting America was not doing its share when you said (emphasis supplied) :

I don't know about where the rest of you are, but it's still fills up the news down here, or maybe that's because I watch the public broadcasters. Anyway, did those arseholes in the Australian Federal Government just do something not entirely shameful? They donated $764M, making Australia the largest donor. Now, surely the American government can top the donation of a country such as Australia. Isn't it true that America donates something like 0.15% of it's GDP despite the 0.75% all attending nations agreed to under the UN in the '90s. Australia is right down there too whereas the usual suspects, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands etc. have reached that target and in fact in some cases exceeded it.
I responded that I thought America was doing its fair share. I think Australia is doing a great job as well - but that invoked the wrath :wavey: :wavey:

Of course me telling you to put the info. in your pipe and smoke it was a little over the top

For the record, I am happy with all monies given by anyone - from $1.00 to a billion. It is not a pissing contest IMO

I read something that puts ALL the donors (even AUSTRALIA) in a different light

Australia's halo is a bit tarnished too

So, I guess NO ONE is immune from finger pointing.

if we're going to list atrocities, wanna know how my country behaved in Indonesia when they were still our colony? :o

Nevermind.

Yes, and what was that pseudo-Scandinavian country that supported the Nazis in WWII?

A bit miereneukerig to me, indeed.

No, I think I can beat you. We were the biggest slavetraders. There.

Yes, but I said it with love and respect and, perhaps, with the tought of Pebbles Flinstone in my twisted head - I, of course, being Bam Bam   :wavey:

"Our love is like the earth, the rain, the sun and the birth". Maybe I shouldn't believe hopelessly naive lyrics either.

I don't think it is necessary to highlight the hypocrisy of any nation here, when this threads purpose was to highlight the good actions any country has done, if you want to go in to hypocrisy, I am very willing, BUT this is not the thread for it, I don't care what country you are from, I want to hear the good efforts of all nations around the world.
